The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

Have a character or idea you want to put up for adoption? Want to find inspiration or help fill roles the community needs? You came to the right place! Read on to learn more about how our system works.

What is an Adoptable Character?

Sometimes a player, or group of players, has an idea for a character, or a role they feel needs to be filled, but for any number of reasons, none of the involved parties wish to write that particular character. Perhaps they just want to involve more people in what they're doing, and want to find someone else to fill that needed/wanted role.

Sometimes a player wants to write a new character, but they want something to build on rather than starting from scratch. Or perhaps they want to fill a needed/wanted role in the community, rather than risking creating a character who might just float around.

This is where the adoptable characters system comes in. Players who want to pass on a character or concept to other people can post about it here, and players looking for someplace to start, or a role to fill, can look here to see if anything jumps out at them. Sound interesting? Read on to learn how to participate!

Posting an Adoptable Character

This is, naturally, the first step in the process. First, grab the code for our Adoptable Character Form and fill in as much information as you know. Keep in mind that it's alright to leave some of these fields vague: if you don't know exactly what the character should be named, or whether they should be 22 or 24, that's okay! Just make sure to give enough information for potential adopters to get a general idea of what you're looking for.

Once the form is filled out to the best of your ability, post it in its own thread in the Adoptable Characters forum with either the character's name, nickname, or role as the topic title. For example: "Selena Venture," "Mia Casuana's Childhood Friend," and "Rebellion Coinshot" are all acceptable topic titles for adoptable character threads. If you're familiar enough with our tagging system, you can choose to add additional information about the character's type as a prefix ("[Skaa Rioter] Erin", for example), but this is optional.

After that, it's time to wait until someone takes the bait. Which brings us to the next part:

The Character Proposal

If you see a character you like and decide you want to adopt them, do not simply write up a character app and post it. Since people sometimes have very specific things they're looking for when putting characters up for adoption, you'll want to make sure that you and the original poster are on the same page. This is accomplished by writing a character proposal.

Character proposals are simple: simply reply in the thread belonging to a character you want to adopt by telling the original poster about your own ideas for the character. How would you expand on the information you've already been given? How would you fill in some of the blanks that were left? How would you portray the details requested by the original poster? These are all important things to talk about.

Both parties should be aware, though, that this doesn't have to be a "yea or nay" ordeal. Perhaps potential adopters have additional questions about the character before they're ready to share their interpretation, or perhaps the original poster has questions about a potential adopter's ideas. This is perfectly okay - in fact, the more communication that goes on in this stage, the better! Take as much time - and as many posts - as you need to talk it out before making a final decision.

Character Creation

Once it's decided who will be adopting a character, it is up to the parties involved to notify the staff that a decision has been made by either posting about it in the appropriate thread, or contacting one of us privately.

After a decision has been made, the adoption thread is moved into the Character Creation and Discussion forum, where it now functions as a discussion and planning thread for the character. The original poster and the adopter can continue their collaborative efforts here, or even invite other players to begin plotting with the character as he or she is being written (this is particularly useful if, for example, the character being adopted is from a noble house with several current members, is part of a longstanding thieving crew, etc).

Please be aware that this is NOT a workshop thread. This is a discussion about the character creation process and a place to plot relationships and storylines for the character being worked on. You are, of course, perfectly welcome to post the work-in-progress in the workshop at this point, but having another functioning workshop in the Adoptables section just wouldn't work.

However you decide to go about it, once the character application is finished, you're ready to move on to the next step:

Application and Approval

This next step is virtually the same as applying normally, with only one major difference. The same character application is still used, and the same rules apply - with one additon.

You may have noticed the "Approve Before Posting?" option in the adoptable character form. Since some people have very specific things in mind when looking for someone to play a character, we have given members the option to approve or deny an adopted character app. If the original poster has replied "Yes" to this option, he or she must approve the final character application before the staff will accept the character. If the original poster has replied "No," he or she has given up that final say, and the decision is left solely to the staff, as with any non-adopted application.

"I selected the approval option. How do I approve an adopted character?"

Simply post a reply in the character's application thread indicating that you give your final approval. After that, the staff will take over for the rest of the application and acceptance process.

Note to Adoptable Character Posters: If you select "Yes" for the approval option, please be considerate of the person adopting the character by responding to the final application as quickly as you can. If there are any extenuating circumstances - going out of town, lack of internet access, etc - please let us know as soon as possible so we can make other arrangements. It's not fair to the adopter to force them to sit and wait.

Once the character is accepted, the adoption process is finished, and the appropriate thread is moved to the Archives section of the Adoptables forum. The adopted character is now a fully fledged member of the RP, and ready to interact with the rest of the cast. Enjoy your new character!
