The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

The inquisitor looked contemplative. He mumbled something under his breath. He pulled out an obsidian axe and stared at it, completely perplexed.

"No reflection," he said musingly.
"Elena won't like that."

When coins flew at him he dropped the axe and pulled weight fromhis ironmind. Then, burning steel and iron, he stopped the coins and pushed them right into the mistborn's path. A wall of disjointed metal.

They won't hurt him, Elena. They'l just stop him.

Heartbeats pounded in Nessa's ears almost as loudly as her own footsteps. She had somehow managed to find her way out into the mists, but she couldn't believe how fast her power was fading. Was this what flaring did? Or had they given her some sort of faulty source? It must have been too good to be true that drinking those things would give her such a boost for very long.

The fire within her faded and sputtered out. She could still hear the Inquisitor's laugh, haunting her steps. Mocking her. She would never get away.

Fatigue and hopelessness crashed in on her as she began to stumble. With her power gone, and the excitement of food and Allomancy gone, there was nothing to keep her on her feet.

The world spun, and with a jolt of pain she found herself lying facedown on the rough cobblestones.

Then everything went black.

With the mistborn struggling against the wall of metal, The Inquisitor smiled. Elena approved. We walked heavily over to a chair and took a seat, mind apparently on nothing more that the feel of the floor on his toes. His extra weight held the mistborn in check.

"I have come," he announced, "to join you.

Right?"
he asked the air beside him, then nodded.

Perrin grunted at the strength of the Inquisitor pushing back against the boxings. He cursed at himself inwardly; it was stupid of him not to have released the coins sooner. This was not a good situation. Perrin was confident that he'd be able to dodge out of the way of the coins if he stopped pushing, but he wasn't very confident that those coins wouldn't fly back and hit other people in the room. He wasn't willing to take that risk... yet.

He eyed this... Valkyn. Was the man talking to someone that hadn't entered the room yet? Either way, there was no way that Perrin was going to be trusting him, "Join us?" he stoked his pewter a little, easing a small amount of strain from his iron push, "By join do you mean slaughter?"

The inquisitor looked at him, expression unreadable. as he concentrated, the room became less tense. His gaze was not threatening, regardless of the spikes. Eventually, he shook his head.

He replaced his hood and reclined in the chair. His silence was answer enough. The imprisoning coins fell to the floor with a rude tinkling.

With the coins now on the floor, Perrin moved himself directly in between the Inquisitor and the group of obviously scared men standing towards the back of the room, or at least those that hadn't fled out the door into the main work room of the shop. Resisting the urge to launch another attack, Perrin turned his furious gaze to Ignas, "You've got some explaining to do, Obligator."

"Indeed," Maks said from behind him, "More warning than telling us to 'prepare ourselves' would be appreciated the next time you decide to bring one of the creatures made to hunt people like us to our secret meetings." Was that annoyance in Maks's voice? And directed at Ignas no less. Well that was certainly a rare event. Despite their differences the two usually got along surprisingly well. But Perrin could hardly blame him for being upset with Ignas. He was fighting the strong urge to land a solid punch on those tattoos spread across the man's face.

Ignas smiled. "This is Valkyn. Formerly, he was a Venture. He's the High Inquisitor's son, actually. You should be excited, gentlemen. We now have the most powerful double agent in the Final Empire!

"I apologize for the lack of warning, but Valkyn has a deep schedule for himself. It would have been possible for him to not arrive at all.

"But know that now we are not just guarded by ourselves. We have our own guardian inside the Inquisition. He won't betray us... his wife was skaa, actually, and she was killing when he became an Inquisitor. He has a great desire to annihilate the Steel Ministry."

There was a silence around the inquisitor. His lips were twisted in a wry smile. There was a subtle aura of danger in the room, perceptible to all but Maks. An undertone of misery, hatred, and bitter agony was projected from the once-man.

He brought out a lute, which he had kept tied behind his lower back, and started strumming a haunting tune. Slow and weary, the strings seemed to weep. He used a small trapezoidal device to play the strings, making the sound at once smoother, and sharper. Unorthodox, to be sure. Still, the piece set the tone for the meeting, growing darker and angrier as it progressed. Eventually, the inquisitor started humming softly.

A song to make the Ashmounts pause. and then growl with deep fury.

"Just because his wife was skaa does not mean that we can trust him. He became an Inquisitor. A supreme enforcer of the Lord Ruler. I'll be more inclined to trust the man when.... well, I'll probably never be inclined to trust the man," Perrin said, muscles still tense, ready to spring into action. "I barely trust you, Ignas. Especially with all the wonderful thrills you've decided to give us tonight."

Perrin scrutinized the creature as it started to play a lute. At least the sanity of the man, or rather lack thereof, was now confirmed to Perrin. "While a serenade would be lovely just now," Maks said stepping forward to the center of the room, "I'd like to point out that we seem to have lost the young pewterarm."

In all the recent... excitement, Perrin had completely forgotten about Nessa throwing the table and then fleeing from the kitchen. Apparently he wasn't the only one, because most of the men seemed to come out of the shock induced stupor and look around searching for the girl that obviously wasn't there.

The scowl still pasted on his face, Perrin turned to the door that Nessa had fled out of, "I'll go find our little friend, shall I? Hopefully she's still burning pewter; will make it easier to find her," he said, then paused for a moment to see if anyone had any objections.

The inquisitor struck a final chord, then put his lute away. He stood and pushed his chair in as if he were in a nobleman's manor instead of a skaa hovel. He moved softly to the door, burning bronze and bowed to each of the Skaa as he passed them. Elena would be upset if he was rude.

When he passed through the door, he started storing weight in his ironmind, and pushed lightly off a dropped coin. he flew into Elena's embrace, hunting for her heartbeat with bronze.

The girl had travelled far with pewter, but he could feel it very faintly in the distance. Catching up with her would not be a problem. Convincing her to stop running? much harder.

Soon her pewter faded out, but he reached her last obvious location and pushed up, hunting for the tell-tale blue lines.

there: collapsed two streets over. He landed next to her and picked up her limp body. pewter was necessary to handle her well, but he was ready to return to the hideout when Perrin came in sight.

No one voiced any objections, so Perrin took that as consent to go find her. However, before he could leave the room, the sound of the lute stopped and he turned to see the Inquisitor pushing in his chair and then bowing to each man in the room. Perrin rolled his eyes. This was not a ball for the Lord Ruler's sake. And since when were Inquisitors polite? Wasn't that an oxymoron?

Everyone watched silently as the creature silently left the room. "Well now that it's left, hopefully we can get back to our plans," Perrin said with a huff, "I'll be back soon with the girl."

The mists swirled almost serenely around him as he stepped outside, the cool night air helping him to calm his nerves. He extinguished his copper briefly and burned bronze trying to sense the rhythmic sound of someone burning pewter. There was a faint pulse off to the west in the slums, so faint it was hard for him to focus in on the exact metal that was being burned. So, closing his eyes in an attempt to focus further, Perrin flared bronze. It was definitely pewter that he was sensing. He sighed a little, grateful that the girl was still burning at least a trace amount of pewter.

He flicked a coin to the ground in front of him, and with a quiet leap forward, pushed up into the night sky. The journey went quickly enough, though as he went, the thrumming of burning pewter seemed to fade more and more. Apparently she was running out of her metal. He landed atop a building as the thrumming disappeared completely. With a curse, Perrin flared his tin, hoping to see something, anything that could help him find the girl. A lump formed in his stomach, however, when he saw a large, cloaked form rise, hang for a few moments in the air, and then sink back down.

If something happened to her....

With a new sense of urgency, Perrin immediately pushed towards where he had seen the person drop below the line of buildings. He flared his pewter slightly as he landed in the middle of the street. As he stood up straight, he was met with the sight of an unconscious Nessa being cradled by the creature, Valkyn. The sight made his blood boil.

Perrin strode determinedly toward the creature, his face set in a hard expression. He stopped barely a foot away from the creature, glaring into the would-be metal eyes of the Inquisitor. "Give her to me," he said firmly, "The last thing she needs right now is to wake up with your inhuman face looking down at her."

He didn't wait for a response from it, choosing instead to take her from the Inquisitor's arms. She wasn't heavy at all, especially with pewter burning. Perrin turned, preparing to run back to the shop instead of jump, when he stopped and turned back to the creature. "You need to understand something now, Valkyn," he started, "I will never trust you. You can swear up and down all you want that you'll be loyal to the rebellion, but your every move will be watched and scrutinized by me. If I feel that you betray us in any way, I will take you out. Of that, you can be sure."

Perrin turned again, pausing briefly to down another vial of metal. Then he said over his shoulder to the creature, "Let's go. If you really are part of the Rebellion now, you should be there for the plans we make tonight."

And with that, Perrin began to run through the narrow streets of the slums back towards the shop.

Perrin took the girl from his arms none too gently. The Inquisitor let his pewter go and once again started storing weight. He liked the way it felt. He was a wisp that could be blown away when the wind blew.
"You need to understand something now, Valkyn," the abomination started, "I will never trust you. You can swear up and down all you want that you'll be loyal to the rebellion, but your every move will be watched and scrutinized by me. If I feel that you betray us in any way, I will take you out. Of that, you can be sure."

The Inquisitor smiled as the abomination led the way back to the shop. Distrust was an effective shield which should be carried always.

He started to hum a tune he knew with lyrics to that effect.

It was a cold song, and bitter. He let Elena know with zinc and brass.

Voices. That was the first thing Nessa became aware of. Someone was talking. And then... movement. She was moving. But why? How? She wasn't doing anything.

She blinked and shifted a little, trying to get her bearings. Was.... she being held? That was a first, at least as far as she could remember. But who...?

Shifting again, and trying to get a decent look, she finally recognized the person who was carrying her. He was the same one who had stopped her before, and convinced her to drink that vial of metal. The... Mistborn. What had the people inside called him? Perrin? Yes, that was his name. Why hadn't the Inquisitor killed him? He couldn't have stopped it; no one could kill Inquisitors. For all her confusion, though, in her semi-conscious state she could only manage one faint word:

".... what...?"

They were nearly back to the shop when Perrin noticed Nessa begin to stir. He glanced down at her, with the most reassuring smile he could manage at the moment. "Decided to wake up, eh Sweets? Don't worry," he said, eyes now back on the street ahead, "You're safe. We're almost back to the shop now."

He slowed his pace a little as he rounded the last corner before reaching the dress shop. An apprentice was sitting in the front room of the shop when he entered the door. He nodded silently in greeting as he passed the man. Perrin was only vaguely aware of the creature following him into the shop. Apparently 'death' was going to be a constant guest with the Rebellion now.

The sound of a few low voices in the kitchen reached Perrin's ears. Apparently they had decided on a quick break from official planning since a couple... or a few, valuable members of the group were missing.

As he entered the kitchen with Nessa still cradled against his chest, Maks and Lan both stood up. "Is she hurt?" the old tailor asked.

Perrin shook his head, "I think maybe she just passed out when her pewter burned up. Too much... excitement for one night."

Why does he keep calling me that? Nessa wondered through her exhaustion. Everyone else seems to know my name.

Not that it mattered at the moment, of course, but it was better than thinking about other things. Like what had happened to the Inquisitor, how no one seemed to be hurt, and why in the Lord Ruler's name Perrin had gone looking for her. Who cared about one strange, violent girl?

He did, apparently.

As did others; her eyes had fallen shut again, but as she was carried into the warmth of what she was sure was the kitchen, she heard someone else asking about her. Just who were these people?

Now that they were back at the shop, Nessa knew she should probably climb down. But somehow, she just couldn't move. And so she would just have to let herself be held until Perrin decided to put her down.

At least she was safe. For now.

His song concluded, the inquisitor followed the abomination into the shop silently. A small bow would suffice since he was merely returning after a brief excursion.
The thug was stirring. Her dark hair reminded him of Elena, and thoughts of Elena and half breeds led him to think of the children they hadn't had.

He wasn't sure how he felt about that. He'd have to talk to Elena about it later tonight. Would he be willing to father an abomination if it was Elena's child too?

Yes. Unashamedly, Resoundingly yes.

Elena would make a wonderful mother.

"Here, set her down," Maks said, pulling a chair up, "Arch, grab another vial of pewter for her. It will help her perk up a bit again."

Gently, Perrin set Nessa into the chair that Maks had provided. He kept a hand on her shoulder, however, to make sure that she didn't inadvertently fall to the floor. Arch retrieved the vial of metal and passed it to Perrin, who squatted down in front of the girl. He held the alcohol solution out to her, "Slow burn this time," he said with a wink, "No need to use it all up in five minutes."

"Uhh.... yeah," Nessa mumbled, taking the vial. "Thanks."

Slowly and carefully, so she wouldn't lose her balance or drop the vial - though thankfully having Perrin there to keep her from falling over helped quite a bit - and downed the vial. It tasted every bit as bad as the first one, but immediately that glorious well of power was back.

A 'slow burn,' he had told her. So if what she had done before used it up faster, then....

Carefully, bit by bit, Nessa tapped into her reserve of strength, until - at least compared to before - she had a small but steady flow of it stabilizing her. Gradually the world stopped spinning, and she felt like she could move again.

"To be fair," she muttered a little sullenly, "I was trying to run away from an Inquisitor."

The Inquisitor smiled behind her. No need to diabuse her of the notion that she could escape from an Inquisitor. Elena's heartbeat would have given her away easily, had he wanted to chase her; in fact, it had.

He sniffed the air, and could feel the tension in the room. On a low burn. Something soothing was needed. Yet, the clandestine meeting required something haunting as well. He drew out his lute, and started playing an appropriately calm song, transposing it into a minor key while he played.

The tension in the air rose, but with less intensity. It began to be the focused tension that led to things being accomplished.

Dangerous things.

Just the tone the meeting needed.

Maks chuckled softly, "No one blames you for running. In fact, you weren't the only one," he noted, "Though you did get the farthest."

He turned to face Ignas, who had been remarkably silent after 'introducing' them to Valkyn. "We try to finish up here soon, I think. Nessa needs sleep and everyone else... well we all need to recover a bit," he certainly knew that he did, "What else do we need to sort out?"
