Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. Avyn is not an imposing figure. His short, graying hair frames a hard face, but no more so than any other man who has spent thirty or more years in the mines. His eyes the blue of water during a storm, and his wrinkled, face set, seemingly permanently, in a look of empty despair, soot smudging his face like dark tears. His body is lean, accustomed to hunger, and toned by mining, but beginning to weaken and atrophy after 2 years forgotten, drifting through the slums like a ghost.

Avyn has been very nearly completely crushed by the Lord Ruler’s society. Though he does not particularly care about obeying laws, he has learned the hard way that it is better to give in than resist. But there is anger under the apathy he feels towards both society and all other skaa that, if released, will come out in a flood. He has an ingrained obedience to the nobility, and a natural fear and hatred of taskmasters, but feels no brotherhood with other skaa. He regards both himself and other skaa as simple laborers, as a race designed to do nothing more extraordinary than mine or do other menial labor.

Born in 866 in the skaa slums in Luthadel, Avyn has had a hard life. His father, Arthen was a miner and his mother, Brein, sewed clothing to sell to other skaa workers. Starting work in the mines at 18, he worked his entire life. He met a girl at 20 and they had a skaa wedding, a simple act of love and resistance against the Lord Ruler and his government. His father died when right before his wedding, and his mother soon after, and their loss caused him to have make an internal vow that he would always be there, be present, for his family, because he knew what it felt like to lose family, and didn’t want his children to have to feel the same loss until they had grown, and had families of their own to care for.

They had 3 children, and he worked day in and day out to feed them. He was a kind man, who refused to give in to the emotional numbness that took so many other skaa. He went out of his way to be kind and generous to his family and thought always of his family first. They meant everything to him. However, they would not all grow up. His first two children, both boys, went into the mines the day they turned 18, just as their father had. However, after about a week acclimatizing to the harsh conditions, a rotted beam crumbled, and the mine shaft collapsed, burying the two brothers. His third child, a girl named Tenna, grew up and married a skaa worker(who, it turned out, was the child of a prostitute), and they had a child, a girl named Etan. The couple, his own wife, and their girl were his only sources of happiness throughout the next 11 years.

The terrible night that ended it all seemed normal. Avyn returned to the slums after a grueling workday, and started to eat dinner with his family. However, the smoke they smelled was not from dinner. A fire had started two floors up, but by the time they realized it, the fire had spread to their floor, and they rushed to escape. The fire spread quickly, and soon they were all choking on smoke as they pushed down the stairs through the mob of others attempting to escape in front of them. When they finally got out, Etan had passed out of smoke inhalation. After ten minutes or so, when she awoke, she seemed to be hyperactive, jumping at even the smallest noise. The men sent to investigate the fire had brought an obligator with them, and he burned bronze as he took notes on the wreckage. He detected a pulse from Etan burning tin, and without betraying any hint of knowledge, tracked it to Etan. He took a sketch of her, and sent it by messenger back to the inquisitors, who sent one of their own to “take care of her.”

He arrived the next night, while Avyn was relieving himself. He returned to see the gory, destroyed remains of his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter. His granddaughter had a deep hole in her chest, reaching all the way through her heart and out her back. Had he had any allomantic potential, he would have snapped then, but since he was full-skaa, he simply broke inside. He felt that he had abandoned his family, breaking the vow that had kept him from giving up years ago., and that he should have at least died with them. After spending days in the temporary shelter they would have stayed in until their building was rebuilt, mourning, he disappeared.

He never was seen entering or leaving the mine, never used or even took his food slips. He wandered through the skaa slums, at first relying upon the hospitality of other skaa, but after a string of skaa who had simply refused to let him even enter their homes, he has resorted to begging.

Avyn awoke suddenly at a blunt pain in his stomach. He curled into a protective ball around the pain, causing the ash that had accumulated on the streets and his ratty cloak to swirl up around him, temporarily obscuring his view of his attacker. His eyes averted, all he could see was the mottled black and grey blur he had created in front of him. When the ash finally settled, all he could make out leather boots, a silk maroon cloak billowing in the wind, and neatly styled hair. Nobility. Of course, he thought. He could just barely make it out when the nobleman muttered “filthy beggar.” He sighed, brushing the ash off of his clothes, and adjusted his position. It was still early yet. Why would a nobleman be out in the outskirts of a slum so early in the morning? Avyn considered following him, and even moved himself, stiffly, into a position where he could easily stand up. But then he slumped, seeming to physically deflate, and remained where he was. No point to it, anyway, he thought, it’ll only get me in trouble. It seemed not everyone agreed with him however. After a few moments, he saw a shadowy, partially soot covered figure emerge from a side alley. After seeing this, he reconsidered, though still as physically deflated as before. I should be dead anyway, he told himself, so why am I worried?

He rose up again, slowly gaining his feet, and set off at the pained, arthritic gait that was all he was capable of anymore. Though he didn’t expect to ever catch up, the attempt proved sufficient motivation to wake him up and get him moving to stake out a new begging spot. As the shady stores slowly passed by, a vaguely familiar voice began to travel down the streets, too refined for a skaa, but not so haughty as to be a noble from a high house. As he followed the sound, he saw the maroon cloak once again. The noble was standing in front of a reputable skaa tailor shop. Lan’s. Next to the nobleman was the shadowy figure he had seen earlier. To his surprise, the figure was a woman, though not as wispy looking as some he saw wandering through the slums. It seemed as if she had gotten in his way while he was passing the shop.

The shop intrigued him. What he saw in the window directly contradicted his beliefs about the skaa, including himself. How can skaa be successful? We were meant to fail, were created to be simple laborers. How can this “Lan” be selling clothing to nobles? He was perplexed, as this simple tailor shop completely contradicted his beliefs, making him question the ideas that had been both his torment and comfort over the last two years. He had convinced himself that it wasn’t his fault, that skaa, by design, were inferior. He had told himself that the Inquisitors had the final say, that whatever they decided had to be true, and so Etan’s death was necessary. These beliefs had just been destroyed, shattered by a simple tailor shop. And so, contrary to everything his last two years of guilt, shame, despair, and fear had taught him, he went in.

Hi, I posted this application more than two months ago, and have yet to get a reply... I know summer can be busy, mine certainly has been, but two months seems a long time to wait. A final decision on my character whenever you guys have time would be greatly appreciated.
