Renette has the delicite, dark features of a Deveaux. She’s a slight girl, on the shorter side of average height, about 5’3”. Her arms and fingers are long, which is how she is able to play the Viola. Her eyes are a dark brown, and her hair lighter in shade than is normal for a Deveaux. Her body is toned and muscular from all her combat training.

Renette always wears her hair up, unless she’s performing. So much about her changes when she performs that she’s almost an entirely different person. Her normal, stiff posture becomes more relaxed, her face more brilliantly expressive, and she loosens up. In her normal life she’s always grounded when standing, but it’s not overly noticeable. She stands at a small angle, one foot in front of the other and off to the side a bit. It’s almost a model stance, with both legs straight and her hip popped in an almost delicate way. Her favorite colors are dark green and a light pink, not an eye-burning pink, but bright.

All of Renette’s expressions start in the eyes. Even if her whole face is impassive, her eyes will tell how she feels. When she laughs, it starts in the eyes and slowly creeps into a small, incredibly joyful smile. Her laugh is sweet, though not melodiously low-pitched. It’s actually quite high in register, which just makes it more infectious. When she’s truly amused by something her laugh often goes silent. When she cries it’s quiet, and only ever because she’s lonely.

Renette is a creature of opposites. She is disciplined, completely desensitized to blood and violence, and rarely shows any uncontrolled emotions. She’s a quiet young woman, with much social experience, but not enough guts to speak much when in a social situation. Speaking makes her nervous, and when she does speak, it’s well thought out and never out of turn. It’s hard to get her to laugh, but her smile is a sweet one and a great reward to anyone who is able to tempt it out of her. In short, she’s reserved, yet sweet when she wants to be.

Being part of a Great House, even though she’s not of the main family line, has given her an odd look on life. Renette knows that she’s above a lot of people, and it comes across occasionally. She doesn’t know enough about the Skaa to have an opinion of them, so she mostly ignores them, but lesser nobles rarely get much of a positive reaction out of her, if they get a reaction at all. She feels that they must be doing something wrong to be lower than her. Although, getting any kind of genuine reaction out of Renette is difficult. She has a few friends, but only ones that she sees during balls. At balls, she does her social duty, but she doesn’t seek out social situations. She doesn’t think herself very good with words. She hates how lonely she feels sometimes because of her inability to become good friends with someone. Her reserved emotions often keep people away.

However, her passion and feeling when playing music is unmatched. She is truly a musical prodigy, playing three different instruments and composing for all of them. The minute Renette picks up her Viola, her posture instantly relaxes. She may not be good with words, but that’s because when she speaks, it’s really her second language. Music is truly her mother tongue and her eloquence when speaking through music is incredible.

Music is her outlet. She’s slow to speak, and not an intellectual genius, nor is she very good at combat, but music is where she shines. Due to the hours Renette spends practicing, her technique is fantastic, but anyone who has ever had the honor of hearing her play an original composition can attest to her skill with emotion and the language of music. The few genuine smiles that some of her acquaintances have ever seen were when she was performing. The only time she has been seen crying was during a performance of a beautiful, mourning, heartbreaking nocturne she had written for the Viola.

Special Skills: Musicianship, Renette’s charisma when on stage, Allomancy, in some ways her reserved nature could be seen as a special skill.

Strengths: Renette is a lovely girl with quite a talent for music. She’s a good Allomancer and fighter. Renette is never offensive and she never speaks out of turn. She always thinks before she speaks, which keeps her out of tight predicaments.

Weaknesses: Renette’s drive to play music has been detrimental to her combat skills. Because she’s so reserved, she’s a hard one to get close to, and she gets nervous in certain social situations.

Renette was born the eldest child of Aaden Deveaux and Emilie Deveaux(née Duchemin). For the first ten years of her life she was an only child and she loved it. She didn’t have any siblings to fight with, nor did she have to ever compromise when she wanted something. That’s not to say that her parents always gave her what she wanted, but she got her way more often than not.

She began playing the piano when she was three. There wasn’t much of an effect on her when she started, but it was about to become a very important part of her life. However, she was always very emotional, but when she practiced she would be more happy afterwards. They realized very quickly that she was good at the piano for her age. She just seemed to know so much of it intuitively. Although raw talent only goes so far, she didn’t complain about practicing the piano.

Other than the introduction of music into her life, her life until age five was fairly uneventful. At age five everything changed.

Like all Deveaux children, Renette was taken to be snapped the day after she turned five. She was sitting in her room with her birthday present, a violin. She had been told that she needed to wait until they got her a violin tutor, but she was an impatient child and wanted to at least look at it. Maybe pick it up. Surely not try to play it, though. That thought never even entered her head. Not at all.

Renette’s father summoned her, and, having already been instilled with the knowledge that one never ignored one’s parents, she had no choice but to go. She was taken to a strange room that she didn’t recognize and told to drink a foul concoction that burned her throat. When the beating began is where her memory of the moment becomes fuzzy. All she can remember is the pain and confusion, but no details. However, according to eye-witness accounts, the wrath of a half-dead, five-year-old coinshot only results in her being thrown against a wall. Because she was only half-conscious she can’t tell them what she was trying to push on, but it was something large, apparently.

The next thing she knew was lying in a comfortable bed with her injuries treated. It still hurt, and she felt horrible. It didn’t help that she was told she couldn’t practice, or start learning violin, until she’d healed. Her father, who was sitting next to her when she awoke, looked proud. He told her that she was a Coinshot, and she wished she’d been told she was a Pewterarm. Then she could have started practicing sooner. Those feelings quickly evaporated. While she recovered she started her Allomantic training, which turned out to be so intensive that she couldn’t have practiced even if she had wanted to. She had a lot of initial skill with her Allomancy, it only took her a few hours to get the bell by her bed to ring.

Two years into her training she finally had time to start learning the violin, and had also decided to pick up the viola. They were such similar instruments that, especially with her amazing natural talent, she assumed that she would able to pick up on both very quickly. It took her a while to get her parents to get her a viola, and with her combat and Allomantic training going as slowly as it was, it took a while. Her initial skill had run out and she had no drive to keep trying.

She now got to a point in her combat training where she hit a plateau. She was not a particularly graceful or coordinated person, and so it was becoming very difficult to master the more complex fighting. Renette would often try to get out of her training and go practice her violin, by as that was disapproved of more and more she learned that she couldn’t always have what she wanted.

When she was twelve she had to kill a Skaa for the first time. She didn’t want to. She’d been desensitized to blood, she’d seen people die, and she’d been told that she would have to kill eventually, but when the time came she couldn’t do it. When she was told to kill the Skaa man in front of her she refused outright. She would have left the room, but her tutor forced her to stay. He told her that it would just be harder the longer she stalled, but she held out for almost half-an-hour. However, through lectures and threats, she finally gave in. Her tutor explained to her that none of it would be on her conscience. She was not responsible for the lives that she was ordered to take.

Renette started crying when she saw the fear in the Skaa’s eyes. She hadn’t cried in years until this moment. She hadn’t thought it would be so easy to put a knife in someone, and it appalled her. She couldn’t look away from the dying man, even though she wanted to. She felt more horrible than she ever had. After he was completely gone she fled to her room and cried.

In the space of a month, Renette had pulled all her emotions inward. It helped her cope with the insanity that was being a Deveaux Allomancer. The sweet smile that had once graced her face was only rarely seen, and she was very reserved about what she said. She trained regularly, sometimes sparring with Damien, but not always. She continued to play music, finally started playing the viola, and found it a wonderful outlet for all her pent-up emotions.

At fifteen she was presented to Urteau society. She was a little wary, as she had never been very social, but when she finally got to the ball she was not nearly as scared. Yes, she didn’t talk very much, but she found the atmosphere of a ball was almost like a performance. She was just on a stage and none of it really mattered to her personal life. She continued to go to balls, mostly just to make an appearance. She didn’t know anyone on a personal level, and didn’t feel a need to see them outside of the atmosphere of a ball.

Her Allomancy had improved by miles, but not so much her combat. It was very slow going for her, and even now she’s not the best fighter. She just has more drive to practice music than she does to practice fighting, and it definitely shows. If she put the same amount of energy into her training that she does into her practicing, she could be a wonderful Allomancer.

That, however, changed when she was seventeen. Lucille Deveaux, her cousin, invited her to a book club. Also in attendance was another relation of Renette’s, Winchester Duchemin, and so she decided to go. The chaotic aura that surrounded the group scared Renette at first, but then she began to feel more comfortable around them, and started smiling more. She didn’t always hang out with the group, but when she had the time, she did try, and she always made to make sure to talk to them at balls.

When Damien and Lucille left for Luthadel, she already knew she would be joining them soon. Her family thought it would be good for her to be part of the Luthadel scene for a while, and she was excited to see what kinds of inspiration she’d find there. She left shortly after they did, purely because her plans weren’t settled in time for her to leave with them. She was a little nervous about not knowing many people in Luthadel, but she knew it would be a good experience for her, so she didn’t complain about it.

Renette Deveaux ran her fingers along the scroll of her viola and smiled, bringing it up to her shoulder. She closed her eyes, the heavy feel of the instrument resting on her hand. She took a deep breath and sounded a rolled C chord. It changed to C minor and then to G major. It was as easy as breathing. She tweaked the tuning on the G string and tested it with another beautiful chord. Next she ran through a number of scales and arpeggios.

She was in her own world now. The barge was gone, her alomancy, her training, all of it. It was just her and her music.

She had brought along both her instruments, and hoped that the Keep would have a piano. She was looking forward to being in Luthadel, but it would be so very dull without a piano. Her parents had mentioned her training when she left, but those worries were gone for the moment. Her cousins would be there too, though she was sure they would have other things to do. Everyone always did.

She made herself stop thinking about that. It only made her feel lonely. She focused on the music. There was a particular etude she had been wanting to practice, but she couldn’t remember which one it was. That bothered her, but she didn’t have much time to practice today. The barge was supposed to reach Luthadel in an hour, or so she had been told. So she practiced other things. There was a cadenza she had been working on, and she began to play through it, stopping occasionally to fix something. It was coming, but it had a long way to go. She’d never get to perform it. That was what bothered her the most. So much bothered her, and this was the only time she could think of it.

She hit a long run and began it only to be interrupted by a knock on the door. She sighed and called, “come in!” before setting down her viola and turning. It was the man in charge of the barge she was traveling on. “Yes?”

“We’ll be arriving in Luthadel in ten minutes. You should be getting ready, miss.”

Renette was back to her reserved self and nodded, full of control. “Of course.” She turned, an indication that he could leave now. She heard the door close and let her fingers run over her instrument again before setting it in its case. She took her time putting it away, and then pulled the strap on the case over her shoulder. The servants could carry her other luggage, but she carried the instruments herself. Her control was back now. No music to carry her away. She stepped out her door into the lightly falling ash and looked up at the city. “The ash will ruin my dress.” She muttered, holding her skirts up with her free hand.

The city was ugly and dirty. She waited to disembark, her excitement growing. Luthadel was definitely not the most beautiful place, but it would be interesting, and there was so much more room to spar. Her parents would be happy.
