Renette watched Keep Deveaux draw closer out of the window of her carriage and smiled slightly in excitement. This was completely new to her, and never did she realize exactly the enormity of the keep, or Luthadel. The contrast of the two different parts of the city alone was amazing, in a rather morbid way. She could see parts of the slums, especially when she had first arrived, and everything was so dark and dreary. The keeps, however were the exact opposite. They were clean, or at least cleaner, and bright.

As she drew closer, Renette could see the magnificence of the keep even better. She had thought that the manor she lived in in Urteau was big, but this put it to shame. It was several stories high and the stone was dark, but that just made the windows stand out more. That and the immense amount of detail that she could see on the stone made it incredibly impressive.

The carriage stopped and Renette stepped out, onto the ground, holding her skirts with one hand and a parasol with the other. Ash was falling lightly and she didn't want her dress to get stained. It was one of her favorites. She gazed up at the keep for a moment as she shouldered her large case, it was designed to hold both her instruments so it was twice as large as it would have been if she just had one. She walked up to the door, trusting that the servants would get the rest of her luggage. Taking a deep breath, Renette knocked twice on the door.

Luci bounced lightly on the balls of her feet as she gathered with a few of her cousins in Keep Deveaux's massive entry hall. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, tinted by the stained glass. It was a beautiful day, perfect for arrival in Luthadel, and Luci couldn't be more excited. Renette was coming!

From the corner of her eye, she caught Damien smirking at her. Not truly smirking, of course. It was a Damien smirk: his face was perfectly composed, as usual, but she could see the smile in his eyes. It would have been hard to catch if she didn't know him so well, but it was there. She could always spot it, even when no one else could.

A sudden knock came at the door, which the servants promptly pulled open. Well. They acted promptly, but it was an incredibly large and heavy door, so it took them a moment to actually get it open. But when they did, there she was. Renette Deveaux. A huge grin split Luci's face as she bounded over.

"Renette!" she said happily. "It's so good to see you!"

Renette was surprised by Luci's greeting, but she probably should have been expecting it. She stepped through the door and let go of her skirt. "It's good to see you too." She said, with the faintest hint of a smile. She stepped farther into the hallway, glancing around at it. It was definitely bigger than she had imagined, and grand. She noticed that the light was tinted by the windows, which produced an interesting effect, but she didn't think that the keep would have good acoustics, from what she had seen of the outside and this room. She'd have to trust that she would be able to find a room to practice in that wasn't to bad.

She lowered her parasol and looked from the Luci to the group standing in the hallway. "I was not expecting such a greeting." She said after a careful moment. She supposed that she would have to be more careful than normal with what she said, now that she was in Luthadel, but the presence of people that she knew made her more comfortable with the situation, at least for the moment.

"Of course you weren't," Luci said with a grin, "which is why I arranged this. This keep is quite beautiful, but it's also quite cold and drafty at times, so I thought it'd be nice to warm it up a little in other ways. Look, I even got Damien out of his office for a whole few minutes!"

"An impressive achievement indeed," Damien said as he came up next to her. He must have thought that was pretty funny, because he almost sounded amused. "Welcome, Renette. I trust you had a pleasant journey?"

Renette raised her eyebrow a millimeter in amusement. It was not the most noticeable reaction. "The scenery was drab, but I kept myself occupied." She replied, leaning the parasol against the wall. The servants could take care of it. "But tell me, is the library good?" She said, knowing that Luci would have already explored every inch of the library here. "I never thought I would miss books until I left home." She was mostly hoping that the library would have a music section or something similar. She was beginning to run out of new material to learn, as the music library at home had been limited.

"Oh, it's just delightful!" Luci exclaimed, bouncing a little in her excitement. "It's at least twice the size of what we had in Urteau, and it's full to the brim with all kinds of books! The philosophy and poetry sections are quite respectable, of course, and history is massive. I even had a peek at the music section when I heard you were coming, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's quite a bit larger than back home." She was talking a mile a minute, but she couldn't quite help herself. Not only was there another friendly and familiar face here, in Luthadel, but she had asked about the library! It was a winning combination for sure.

"Of course," she continued with a grin, "If you still need more music after that, I already know where all the best bookstores are, and I'm sure it won't be hard to find ones that specialize in music."

Renette was relieved. Without anyone to spar with and no books to read, she'd run out of things to do on the barge and had finished learning all the music she had brought along. She thought to herself that it was surprising that Luci had actually gone outside when there was a library like the one that she described. She didn't say that, though. Now was not the time for snark. The only thing that made her feel dissapointed was that she'd have to go back to her normal routine now that she was around other allomancers. She wouldn't have nearly enough time to practice as she liked. She didn't say anything about that either.

"I am glad." Was all she said, after careful deliberation about what to include in her response.

A firm but gentle hand settled on Luci's shoulder - Damien, of course. He was giving her his best "try to restrain yourself" face, and she blushed a little bit. Of course! Renette had just arrived after a long and tiring journey; the last thing she needed was someone blathering in her ear a mile a minute.

"You must be tired," she said, much more calmly than the way she'd been going on a moment ago. "Would you like to see your rooms? And then if you're feeling up to it, perhaps I could show you around the keep, introduce you to some of our cousins, that sort of thing."

Renette flicked her eyes to Damien, grateful that he had stepped in. She didn't know if she would have been able to continue to keep up with Luci if she kept going at that speed. "That would be lovely." She said, readjusting the case on her shoulders. "The trip was not tiring, but it is good to be back on solid ground."

"I can relate," Damien said as Lucille retreated slightly. She looked slightly embarrassed, but honestly, it was refreshing to see her so enthusiastic. There were far too few things in a place like the Final Empire that could do that for her. As long as she didn't let her enthusiasm carry her away, she could be as bouncy and energetic as she pleased, so far as Damien was concerned.

But Renette did need to be shown her rooms, and the last thing she probably wanted was to stand around in an entryway when she could be settling in instead. She kept shifting the instrument case she held; surely it must be rather heavy, but some musicians were understandably very picky about who handled their instruments. Still, it would be incredibly thoughtless of him to not so much as offer, and bringing it up it was an easy way to get everyone moving again.

"That case looks heavy," he noted. "Would you like me to carry it up for you, or would you prefer to hold onto it?"

Renette shook her head, but gave him a grateful shrug. "I would rather carry them myself, thank you." She said, looking towards the end of the large entry hall. "I can drop them off at my rooms and then they won't get in the way of the tour that is quite inevitable."

Damien just nodded, and Luci led the way forward through the massive keep. Forward and upward, through stone corridors hung with paintings and tapestries and plush carpets running along the floors. It was a bit of a climb to the upper floors where members of the family lived, but it paid off with spectacular views of Luthadel that very few places could rival.

They finally reached the door to Renette's rooms, and Luci stepped aside so Damien could open the door for her.

"Here we are!" she said cheerfully. "It's all yours. Take your time, settle in, and send for me if you'd like a tour."

Renette stepped into the room and looked around, finally setting down the case and leaning it against the wall. They were cozy, as rooms like this went, and definitely grander than her rooms had been in Urteau. She would have to explore more thoroughly later, once her bags had been unpacked. She did notice, however, that the room lacked a music stand. She'd definitely have to deal with that.

"I do not mind being shown to the library, at least. There is little for me to do in here until my bags have been unpacked." Renette said, turning away from the room to face Luci and Damien.

"I'm certain Lucille will be happy to escort you," Damien said with his gentleman's smile, "But I'm afraid I must take my leave of you now. Have a lovely afternoon, and try not to get into too much trouble, hm?"

"Very funny," Luci said as she gave him a parting hug. "Go on then, back to that stuffy office with you. I'll see you at dinner."

After Renette had a chance to say goodbye to Damien if she wished, Luci turned to her with a grin. "The library is this way," she said. "Follow me!" And with that, she took off back down the hall.

"It took me a while to learn my way around," she explained as they walked, "and I still get lost. So don't worry about it if it happens. There's always someone around to help you get to where you need to go. There are a couple music rooms around here somewhere, but I don't know where they are. You could probably commandeer a sitting room as well, but I'm the wrong person to ask-- Ah!"

They rounded a corner, and Luci found herself almost colliding with their cousin Rosalie. She stepped back lightly, skirts swirling, and then grinned hugely. This was a perfect opportunity!

"Rosalie!" she exclaimed happily. "What perfect timing you have! This is our cousin Renette from Urteau; she's just come by barge. Renette, this is Rosalie. You two might end up as sparring partners soon, so this is a perfect chance meeting!"

Renette nodded politely to Damien. "I will most likely see you there as well." She said before she was pulled away by Luci. She should have expected that her cousin would be so excited about the library. She listened to Luci ramble about the keep, noting the fact about the music rooms. She would have to remember to ask about it when she met more of her extended family.

As they turned a corner, Renette nearly ran into her cousin, who had stopped suddenly.

"Rosalie! What perfect timing you have! This is our cousin Renette from Urteau; she's just come by barge. Renette, this is Rosalie. You two might end up as sparring partners soon, so this is a perfect chance meeting!"

Renette pushed the newly returned thoughts of having to spar to the back of her mind as she nodded a polite, reserved greeting to Rosalie. She pulled the small emotions that she had been accepting back into herself and reminded herself to not say anything without thinking. She could get rash when around Luci, purely because Luci's bubbly attitude made her relax her guard. "I am pleased to meet you, Rosalie."

Rosalie had just come from the training arena as she finished up her morning training. It ran much longer than she wanted it to, but she couldn't get the new technique her instructor was trying to teach her. It took her the better part of the morning and apparently the afternoon to even master the most basic concept. She was frustrated and trying not to show it.

Rosalie was fresh out of her training clothes and into something more acceptable for a young lady of her station. She was more comfortable in the trousers, honestly, but she was expected to act a lady when she wasn't training.

The walk back from the training ground to the library where her brother was most likely napping took her around several corners. Rosalie was so used to the Keep by now she never got lost, but she almost never paid attention when she was lost in thought. She navigated by feel most of the time, leaving her mind open to fume.

"You have grown sloppy. Where is your mind today, Rosalie?" Rosalie mocked her instructor as she rounded a corner, practically bumping directly into her cousin Lucille, and another member of the family -- possibly another cousin. She had to burn pewter to keep her balance and it took her a moment to realize what she had done.

"Oh, I'm so sorry" Rosalie said. "I hope I didn't hurt either of you." she said nervously. "I was so lost in thought... I wasn't even looking where I was going."

She looked at the girl with Lucille finally for the first time. She smiled. "Welcome to Luthadel, Renette." she said smiling. "I always love meeting a new sparring partner." This was the exact pick-me-up Rosalie needed today. Meeting more family, and forgetting about her entire morning of training.

"Where are you two off to?" she asked.

"We're off to the Library!" Luci said happily, beaming as she usually did at the mention of her favorite place in the world. "Renette is a musician, so I thought I'd show her the music session. And then, well, I don't know. Anything else she wants to do, I suppose. This is her first day in Luthadel, and there are balls coming up!" And of course, any proper (or not-so-proper) lady simply must be ready for a ball, even if she'd just stepped off a barge. To miss the dancing and the excitement would be unthinkable! As long as there were no more skaa lighting things on fire, anyways.

"Would you care to join us?"

"What a coincidence," Rosalie replied, smiling. "I was just off to see Renaud, who I'm sure is taking his mid-afternoon nap in a musty old book." she said.

"I would love to join... as long as we can make my brother take a break from 'reading' so he might accompany me out into the city later for a bit of shopping."

She fell into step with her cousins going toward the library once again. "I'm sure you'll like my brother, Renette. He's much easier to take when he is napping, however. At least he doesn't snore."

Renette followed her two cousins, not saying much. She was content to let them do the talking. She did feel, however, that she needed to respond when spoken to directly. Renette took her mind off the route to the library and nodded. "I would love to go out and see the city. I do not think I brought anything suitable for the balls here." She said, her mind going to all the things that she really didn't think about when packing. She had been to busy making sure that she had as much music and paper as she could fit.

"Oh, perfect!" Luci exclaimed with a little bounce. "Of course, for the more important balls we'll have our gowns made by the Deveaux tailors, but there's not exactly time to go to them for this cycle. I know just the shop, too; I went there with my friend Sanna Tekiel and they had the most beautiful gowns!"

She vaguely wondered if they might chance upon Sanna on their newly planned outing today. The woman loved shopping, after all; in their short time together, they'd certainly done a lot of it, and somehow Luci knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Sanna would leap at the chance to dress a young Lady of high birth for her first Luthadel ball.

But Sanna or no Sanna, they would have a wonderful time together. She was absolutely sure of it. But they were approaching the doors to the library, which promptly made Luci forget all about balls or dresses or shopping. She was certain Renette must knew they were here; the grin on her face was unmistakable.

"Here we are!" she announced all the same. "The Deveaux library!"

And then she opened the doors to paradise.

The library had been built along an outer wall of the keep, with tall windows to allow natural light in, though they were often covered with heavy drapes to protect the books when said light wasn't needed. The bookshelves were exquisitely craftedso that they were beautiful without being gaudy, and an ornate balcony ran along the top of the room so that people on the upper level of the library could look down into the entrance below. And there were books. Books everywhere. And so, of course, it was the most beautiful place in the world.

"The music is this way," she said after Renette had a moment to let it all sink in, then led the way into one of the side wings. Though there were plenty of books in the front room, Deveaux had far too many to keep them all in that one area, so many were kept in these side wings, where sunlight didn't reach but carefully monitored oil lamps provided a warm illumination.

"Here we are," she said at last. "The music section."

((Note: My description of the front area of the Deveaux library is inspired by this picture. I of course changed some things, like adding additional wings and removing the globes, but if you want a general feel for what it's like, that's a good reference to go by.))
