A Fan of Smoke

Winston stared at her neutrally. He could understand why she would want to know. Such information was immensely valuable even with the Keep. He undoubtably knew that there were bound to be Seekers within the Keep that knew what kind of Misting he was. He burnt tin often enough within the Keep, although he tried to stay in areas that he knew were probably being veiled in a coppercloud.

"Lady Lorena, surely you must know and realize that such information is valuable, even within this house. Such information is not disclosed without due consideration, or in exchange for information of equivalent value."

"Haven't you been given information of equivalent value when my status as a Smoker was revealed to you?" She asked sweetly, fluttering her fan slightly and keeping her most charming smile on her face.

Winston watched her evenly. She's trying to charm me Winston realized. Not that he would fall prey to someone such as her. Perhaps he should play a trick on her.

"I had to purchase that information from within the House myself with information that I gathered from Luthadel today." Not entirely untrue, they told me that I needed to prove that I could gather information without tin before they would consider pairing me with a Smoker.

Lorena arched an eyebrow at this, "Had to purchase the information, or the service?" she asked, tapping her fan against the orders that said as plain as day that she was a Smoker.

Winston understood what she was implying. Perhaps he needed to make it clearer what he was getting at. “Perhaps I should rephrase. I needed to provide them with enough information for them to assign me a Smoker. Part of that being that I would come to know the identity of the Smoker."

She tapped her fan against her chin again, this man was incredibly unhelpful. Why he hadn't even reacted to her most charming smile! Most men at least reacted, if not gave her what she wanted at once. "Then I shall make you a deal, Lord Winston, in return for your identity as a Misting I will give you any information I gather at this, and the following two balls." It was a fair enough trade she thought, but perhaps a bit to sweeten the deal, "And I will make myself at your disposal to Smoke for you for the foreseeable future, should I have no orders to the contrary." There, surely that would be enough.

"That would be acceptable." Winston agreed, his face an ever-present unchanging mask. The offer for someone to offer him a copper cloud for the foreseeable future was an offer that he couldn't pass up on. Additionally the news that he was a Tineye would undoubtably spread within the confines of the Keep.

"If you would be so kind as to see that your lunch plans in three days be cleared. I have some business that I will need to attend to where your services would be most welcome assistance."

Winston took a brief opportunity to flare his tin. "You should be able to figure out my abilities from this. You live with three other people. A mother that is fond of lilac perfume, a father that has a penchant to use cologne and a brand that I do not yet recognize, and lastly a little brother that hasn't been entirely toilet trained yet."

Lorena's wrinkled nose was hidden by her fan, a Tineye, she should have figured that out on her own! Surely there was no more useful a power for a House such as the Elariels (except for Smokers of course). It did raise a question however.

"How did you know my younger sibling was a boy?" She asked, then immediately regretted it, "Nevermind I don't want to know, but three days from now you say? Isn't that the day before the Elariel Ball? Whatever is happening then?" Perhaps she could weasel more information out of him. Regardless she would know in three day's time.

"I have a meeting where being able to use my skills would be greatly beneficial to House Elariel. I'll have a carriage arranged to pick us up from the courtyard in the late morning."

Winston glanced over her once noticing the rather ornate functionality of her dress. "Do you happen to have some dresses for outdoor wear? Something of the plainer variety?"

"Yes" Lorena told him, her voice conveying the idea of 'but why would I wear them when I have something like this?' "Do you have any particular color in mind that you would like me to wear, Lord Winston?" Her voice was sugary sweet and tinged with warning. No one told Lorena how to dress anymore, not even her parents.

Winston could pick up on the warning tones in her voice. But whatever was she warning him about? Winston decided to err on the side of caution, ladies tended to so much more emotional.

"Something that will allow you to get away quickly if need be, and won't draw attention to yourself if possible." Winston paused, "We'll be in a public area, but I would leave anything valuable here. Given how bold the skaa have been as of late I only advise you to err on the side of caution Lady Lorena." Winston intoned calmly.

Lorena gave the man a genuine smile, lowering her fan so he could see it, so Lord Winston had some sense, even if he did not see beauty incarnate when it was right in front of him.

"As you say, Lord Winston, is there anything else? My parents will be getting back soon and it would be rather awkward for them to find me alone with a man." She could explain herself of course, but she'd rather not.

"Lady Lorena," Winston responded with a mild tone of reprimand, "I do believe that we still need to work out some details about general plans for the Ball tomorrow evening." Winston replied "We've only worked out that you will be conducting, and I shall follow as needed."

"In my assignment I was also informed that this would be your first Ball, and that you shall be debuting." Winston added returning to his natural tone. "Have you already been through the various gossip topics and the neutral responses? The topics of interest that we should be investigating on the behalf of the House? Additionally, if both of us are roped into a conversation to what extent shall we know each other? There is more information and responsibility roles that needs to be established."

Lorena raised her fan to hide her frown, was it so bad she wanted the man out of her room before her parents came back? But no matter, "Of course I have," she said, "And we'll be acquaintances of course, that's why I thought we had no more to discuss."

Winston could tell that Lady Lorena was having more and more varied emotional responses. She was frowning if the creases around her eyes were any indication. Whereas at the beginning of the conversation she was more elated. She needed more training concerning how to conceal emotional responses. Of course most people in general needed to work on guarding their emotions.

"Very well Lady Lorena." Mentally reviewing her emotional state over the course of their conversation, and the topics covered it seemed that perhaps she was having her womanly period. He couldn't smell any blood, but he had heard that just because he didn't smell anything, didn't mean that it wasn't actually happening. Winston did not want to be around much longer if that were the case, women that were as such tended to be distracting company. It did not help that they tended to grow in volume which made things harder to focus on with his tin-enhanced senses.

Still he needed to attend to the gestures that were appropriate for a man of his station. "May I congratulate you on your upcoming debut." Winston continued in a tone that he thought to be positive. "May your debut be well received and serve to glorify House Elariel"

Lorena resisted the urge to arch a brow at Lord Winton's emphasis of the words 'House Elariel'. He was wrong after all, the debut was to glorify Lorena, followed by House Elariel, they were the ones who had been so graced as to have her born into their house after all. Although why she had been born so low into the house she could not yet fathom. Surely she should be a second, no, first tier Elariel, it seemed only fitting. Whatever, at least she wasn't a fifth, she wasn't a servant.

"Thank you, Lord Winston," she said, "Trust me when I say it will." She smiled at him then, and gestured to the door.

Winston nodded in response. He continued to review his encounter with the younger girl that was to potentially Smoke for him in official functions. While he couldn't make any conclusions as of yet it seemed as if she had an inflated opinion of herself. While it wasn't of any importance now he filed that information away, and made to leave.

"I trust that you will have a good night. And I bid you farewell. Always an Elariel" Winston added that last part to see if she understood the message in the timing and cadence, if not - it did not matter, yet.

This man was very strange, and obsessed with their House, apparently. No matter, Lorena would use him to increase her own prestige and be done with him, indeed the mental image of using his head as an actual stepping stone made her smile. "Of course, Lord Winston. Bye now!" She gave him a small, hurried wave. Hopefully no one would see him coming out of her room, in case they did Lorena moved out of view of the doorway to anyone looking in. She couldn't be caught with a man in her room, she'd have to explain herself then and what was the fun in that? She'd fill her parents in of course, she had to let them know how important she was now, and how interesting, how much more interesting than Edric.
