The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

Hey guys, this is the WIP app for the Head of House Urvon, an Ascending house I'm working on right now. All comments, suggestions, and criticisms are welcome.

I do plan on fleshing out his appearance a bit, so there is a reason that section is so short.

Thanks!

Bernard Urvon
Head of House Urvon

Bernard stands at 6’3, and is quite broad-shouldered and muscular. His gait is extremely relaxed, and he rarely seems worried. He has black, styled hair, and brown eyes that seem to radiate calm. He is clean-shaven, is quick to smile.

One word can describe Bernard perfectly: unflappable. On the surface, and even when one probes a bit deeper, there is almost nothing that can bother Bernard. This is a point of pride for him, as he believes it helps him deal with situations more objectively, and make the best decision. As long as a situation or comment doesn’t cut down to his core, he isn’t bothered by it, and he often makes light of calculated insults from rival houses, taking away their power and by extension, asserting dominance over the rival house.

But the insults that do cut to his core make him extremely angry. He knows how to contain that anger, but when the pressure of multiple such insults becomes too much, he explodes, something that has only happened a few times in his life.

When he isn’t angry, he is quick to laugh, and has a very dry sense of humor. While as a teenager he was a smartmouth, he has turned what once got him in trouble into his wit and negotiating skills that have helped House Urvon begin to attempt to ascend.

However, beneath the unflappable demeanor and easy smile, so far down that Bernard himself rarely notices it exists, is a bit of self-doubt and insecurity, a worry that he is not good enough to lead a Great House, and a fear for the lives of his family should he fail. These doubts usually surface not as emotions but as canker sores, which in the last few years have constantly bothered him.

He is very much a family man, dueling with Astor for fun and playing shelldry with his family whenever he finds time(which is difficult). Though he is a family man, he finds it hard to connect with his daughter Aurora, though he tries.

Though he rarely mentions it in public, Bernard is actually quite the scholar, able to read for hours on end about basically any topic, though when a business or political event comes around, he is able to easily flip a switch in his mind to go from Bernard the Scholar to Lord Urvon the Businessman.

These two contrasting personas have combined to make him a skilled critical reader and a very competent writer, as well as making him a constant planner, but also someone who finds himself overwhelmed if he doesn’t make a list of what needs to get done.

Special Skills: Negotiation skills, critical reading (of contracts, books, etc), skilled writer, great planner.

Strengths: Wit, Unflappable demeanor, intelligent,

Weaknesses: Self-doubt(deep down), cares greatly about family(can be exploited), finds it hard to function without making a to-do list and planning it out.

Bernard was born in the Urvon Manor in Fellise in 876 to Alfred and Ariana(nee Couvre) Urvon. As a young child, he was quite precocious, learning to read earlier than any of his relatives had, and showing signs of intelligence early. Alfred and Ariana were extremely pleased with this, and decided that since he was growing up so much faster than his relatives, he should be beaten earlier too. This beating was no more brutal than any other beating, but it was bad enough that Bernard has repressed it, and can barely remember what happened that day, besides the fact that it was the day he snapped as a Smoker. While not a very important allomantic skill, it was better than nothing, and made him impervious to emotional allomancy when he was burning copper, something that would be extremely useful as a House Heir and later as a Head. Of course, since there is less precision in the use of copper than iron or steel, Bernard didn’t have a particularly difficult training regimen for his allomancy, but the rest of his training made up for it in difficulty.

At this point in the history of House Urvon, the House was beginning to rise extremely quickly in both wealth and influence, and so Bernard was raised with the expectation that he would continue to improve House Urvon. Of course, since he had the innate skills to do so, neither he nor his parents worried much about him failing in his job, though they weren’t very close with Bernard. Alfred was extremely dedicated to House Urvon, costing him time to develop a close relationship with his children, and Ariana was extremely similar to Alfred, focusing on the well-being of the House before the lives of her children. While they respected Bernard’s intelligence, and were sure he’d be an great House Head, his smartmouth made their relationship a bit more antagonistic than a good relationship should be.

To stay away from this tension, Bernard would read in the Urvon library in his free time, developing a love of books and scholarship, and learning much about a variety of things, though many of them wouldn’t be very useful for a House Head. His father believed that reading that much would make him less attentive in his lessons that were specifically designed for a future House Head, and discouraged him from reading. Whenever his father came to talk to him about doing something other than reading, Bernard snuck out a back exit of the library, and went to practice dueling with his trainer, something else he enjoyed, and something that his father actually approved of.

When Bernard debuted at Luthadel balls, his wit made him many friends, and while he was not the life of the party, he was fun to be around. Of course, there were a few more important nobles who made Bernard the butt of their jokes, and teased him incessantly. Since Bernard has always been extremely hard to bother, he weathered the abuse very well for quite a while. But it came to a point where even Bernard couldn’t handle it any longer. The unflappable demeanor gave way to rage, a product of the anger he had bottled up inside for years. He challenged his main tormentor, Adrian Merryweather to a duel, and ended up breaking two of his ribs and both of his arms. While House Merryweather took much more of a hit than House Urvon, he still had to help repair the damage caused, and it taught him to never let his anger get the best of him again, while also teaching those in Luthadel to never get him angry.

When Bernard began to travel throughout Urvon businesses at 16, learning the nuances of each one, he met Katarina Harvell. She was accompanying her father to learn about the workings of Harvell construction, and since Harvell was in the process of being vassalized by Urvon, Bernard was there as well. They courted for a long time, but Bernard was told that she was to be married off to bring Urvon and Harvell closer to House Penrod. But Bernard was already decided. He would marry Katarina, and that is exactly what he did.

Unlike many marriages among the nobility, theirs was one of actual love, and within two years of being married they had their first child, Astor. Bernard was as devoted a father as a House Heir could be, and while Bernard’s love of books and dueling rubbed off on him, his social and negotiation skills did not.

While Bernard did become close with his son through their mutual love of reading and books, Astor’s less than great social skills made their relationship more strained than would be ideal. While this relationship was evolving, so was his relationship with his daughter Aurora, who was born a year after Astor. Aurora, unlike Astor, was the perfect noblewoman, but she didn’t connect with Bernard as Astor did. While Astor was a bit socially wayward, he was his father’s son, and their interests were very similar. On the other hand, Aurora made her father proud as a socially adept, graceful noblewoman, but she was so unlike her father that he was always a bit distant, even though he would give anything for her.

Bernard was extremely reluctant to beat his children when they turned 10, and it took a lot of coaxing from Katarina to persuade him to go through with it. It was a good thing he did, as Astor was a Coinshot and Aurora was a Rioter. And while their training was carried out by professional trainers, Astor’s steel use became a regular part of their friendly dueling, which brought Bernard and Astor closer, while Aurora’s Rioting made Bernard more cautious around her, as even though he could burn copper and she couldn’t influence him with allomancy, he had watched enough of her training sessions to understand that Rioting was more than just allomancy, and it made her uneasy around her.

Within two months of their snapping, Alfred Urvon died, making Bernard the Head of House Urvon. He adjusted relatively well to the position, securing House Urvon a few important contracts that propelled them into position to ascend. But for the first month or so, Bernard was completely overwhelmed, and learned that without making lists of what he needed to do, nothing would get done. So he became a compulsive list maker, not even needing to read them, just needing to write them down. There are countless scraps of paper in Urvon Manor with lists from months ago. By the time Astor turned 16 and Aurora was 15, Bernard had learned to contain his frustration at Astor’s social awkwardness, and so grew much closer to him, but further away from Aurora. As House Urvon continued to grow, Bernard began to try to make contacts with House Deveaux and the Steel Ministry, and he is on the verge of closing the deal with two major contracts that could put them within reach of ascendance.

Bernard sat at his desk, the clock on the wall behind him incessantly ticking. He rearranged the papers on his desk, absentmindedly scratching at his head. He sighed, his broad frame expanding, and then seeming to deflate into itself. He turned to the clock, gave it a glare for a long moment, then turned back to his papers. He was overwhelmed. But he was never overwhelmed. Bernard Urvon is always calm, always collected, always in control. Just because your House is on the verge of ascending doesn’t change anything, Bernard. Just finish working out the details of this Deveaux contract, and you can go duel with Astor.

He rubbed at his temples, then, jumping into motion, quickly pulled out a small square of paper, dipped his pen in ink, and began to write furiously.

Finish drawing up Deveaux Contract

Finish letters to Bertram and Lewes about Deveaux Contract

Meet up with ministry contact about contract

Buy a new suit for the Elariel ball

Eat

Duel with Astor

Satisfied, Bernard adopted a composed, almost regal posture, and began to mentally plan out the rest of his day. If I finish the Deveaux Contract now, I should have some free time before dinner, and the rest of the pressing matters can wait until tomorrow. I should be able to duel with Astor within a few hours, then.

Bernard rearranged his documents once again, dipping his pen in ink once more, and began to write. This time however, his writing was careful, not overly deliberate but also clear, concise, and to the point, while also fulfilling all of the diplomatic requirements. Can’t have Augustin Deveaux thinking we’re not fully on his side. Time seemed to fly by, and the once irritating ticking of the clock seemed to fade away, leaving nothing but the scratching of the pen, the rustle of papers being turned, and Bernard’s thoughts.

When Bernard emerged from this razor sharp time of concentration, he saw that while the sun was still up, it was rapidly setting. He quickly stood, making sure his documents were put away neatly and carefully, and strode through Urvon manor, going first to the Urvon Library, where he found Astor reading.

He tapped him on the shoulder, slightly startling him. But when Astor realized who had broken him out of a similar zone of concentration that Bernard had been in just minutes earlier, he smiled. Bernard returned the expression, saying:

“Keveau? I never thought you to be a mathematician, Astor.”

He laughed as he said it, as both he and Astor knew that while Astor was not a huge fan of mathematics, he would devour any book, regardless of it’s content.

“Of course not, father, but even those who don’t enjoy mathematics can learn something from its logic.”

Bernard had been hoping for a joke in response, but Astor hadn’t taken the cue. The response was profound however, and got Bernard thinking about the logic of the Deveaux contract, and whether he really had got it down right. Now I need to revise the Deveaux contract! But that can come later. Now is time to simply enjoy myself. Lord Ruler knows I’ve had little fun these last few months.

“You have quite the profound point there, Astor. But before we let ourselves be dragged into a philosophical debate, would you like to spar? I know I haven’t had much time lately, but I’ve been feeling the urge to see if you can beat me yet.”

He smiled widely at this, knowing full well that only on a good day, and with some luck, could he beat Astor in a fair duel. Astor understood this joke, laughing and responding:

“I’d like to see you try to beat me, father!”

I really like what you have here. The family dynamic is really interesting, and totally realistic. I'm looking forward to seeing the RP sample.

As of right now, I don't think I see much to critique. The history could use a line edit, as I noticed some grammatical and spelling things, but conceptually the application is sound.
