The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

Gaston watched the entire rehearsal from the balcony seat he reserved for special guests of the family during performances. His wife was as beautiful as she had ever been, and he loved to watch them practice. Watching a performance from start to finish often left Gaston more satisfied with it. He could see the magic as it came into being. And theatre was magic, more magic than any Allomancy ever would be.

He left the booth and went backstage, through the door to the dressing rooms, and lightly knocked on his wife's door, which stood slightly ajar. He could see her in front of her vanity, wearing a dress similar to the one he bought for her all those years ago when they first began seeing each other. Back when they were both so young. She was more beautiful today than he had ever seen her.

For a moment he wondered if he looked presentable enough to approach such a beautiful woman, even his wife. His clothes were proper of course, but surely he didn't look much the same as he used to. His hair had grayed, he started to wrinkle around the eyes, and he wasn't as thin as he remembered being back then. Instead of focusing on his flaws, he would focus on her. He wanted to remind Amorette exactly why he fell in love with her. The door was ajar already, so he pushed it open and cleared his throat.

"I have a strange feeling that we have met before... that I have heard your voice before, is that possible?" Gaston said, a playful grin on his face.
