The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

Lau woke up late that morning, unsure of what was going on. Was that... dancing? And... singing?

After a slightly late morning routine, she began wandering the streets to get a better look at whatever on earth was happening. People were dancing? And singing?...Why? What was going on?

Then... she started to dance? There was music. Coming from somewhere. This was all so confusing...

Then Lau oppened her mouth. And sounds came out.

"What's this? What's this?
There's singing everywhere
What's this?
There's music in the air
What's this?
I can't believe my ears
I must be dreaming
Wake up, Lau, this isn't fair
What's this?" She grinned and began shoving all of her enthusiasm in the routine. She didn't know what was happening, but it was certainly wonderful.

"What's this? What's this?
There's something very wrong
What's this?
There's people singing songs

What's this?
The streets are lined with
Little urchins laughing
Everybody seems so happy
Have I possibly gone daffy?
What is this?
What's this?

There's children dancing nicely
Instead of stealing coins
They're busy choreographing
And absolutely no one's done

There's light in every corner
Oh, I can't believe my eyes
And in my heart I feel the song
That's coming from inside

Oh, look
What's this?
She's twirling on her toe, they kiss
Why that looks so unique, inspired
They're gathering around to sing a chorus
Jumping, dancing, by a fire
What's this?

What's this?
In here, it's true, I've gotten back my voice, how queer
And who would ever think
And why?

I'm singing atop my very lungs, my voice
I'm very full of pride and choice
And there's a smile on everyone
So, now, correct me if I'm wrong
This looks like fun
This looks like fun
Oh, could it be I got my wish?
What's this?

Oh my, what now?
Some singing now has ceased
But look, it's only just decreased
And still, the music does go on and on and my singing
Continues on to sing the words I
Wanted to say so much...
What's this?

The sadness is all missing
And the crying can't be found
And in their place there seems to be
Good feeling all around

Instead of screams, I swear
I can hear music in the air
The sounds of joyful cries
are absolutely everywhere

The sights, the sounds
They're eveywhere and all around
I've never felt so good before
This empty place inside of me is filling up
I simply cannot get enough

I want it, oh, I want it
Oh, I want it for my own
I've got to know
I've got to know
What is causing songs everywhere around?
What is this?"

Lau grinned, and tried to speak. It caused a wheezing cough to come out of her...again. Whatever it was... it hadn't fixed her throat, at least not for longer than it took to sing that song...

Stupid invisible orchestra. And to think for a moment she'd hoped--no. That was dumb. She headed somewhere else. Anywhere else. The whole city couldn't be singing, could they?
