The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

Here at Mistborn: The Inquisition, we have a great faith in our members. You can do virtually anything your character wants. Because we have faith in our members, we don't use skill points to judge Allomantic power or anything.

However, to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable and consistent role-playing experience, here are some rules and guidelines that everyone must follow. Below that is MBI's style guide as well.

Happy RPing!

-Mistborn Staff

Accounts

When signing up for the site, make sure you register with the name/handle you want to go by, not your character's name. If you've made it this far but you already have an account registered with a character name, just contact the administrators and we'll be happy to change it for you. Click here to learn how to post as your characters from one main account.

Please note that since we no longer need multiple accounts to post as our characters, it is against the rules to have more than one account per person (if you were around before the upgrade and have old unused character accounts lying around now, don't worry; this rule doesn't concern that). If you lose your account information and are unable to log in, do not simply make a new account! Contact the staff and we will help you.

Characters

There's no limit to how many characters can control, though we recommend you don't create many characters if you feel you cannot give them the time they deserve. If you have multiple characters, we need you to make a separate account for each of them. Please put in each of their signatures your complete character list. That way, we know which accounts represent you!

There are certain characters that are restricted. You can't have a character who exists in Mistborn: The Final Empire, nor can you play characters like the Lord Ruler, Ruin, Preservation, nor Hoid. It's also courteous to our more long-time members that if they control a noble House, you discuss with them your character if you wanted to join said House.

Topics and Posting

When you create a topic, you can restrict which other characters can join it. For example, if you wanted your character, Gallan, to have a private conversation with his girl, Talia, who is controlled by another player, when Gallan makes his topic, he should put "Talia" in the topic tags. This signals to other players the character that should be present in this topic. Of course, if you want no restrictions, then simply tag the thread as "Open". You can read more about the tagging system here.

After you post your topic, please post in the Universal Continuity Thread so we know approximately when it happens in the story.

Double posting is typically not allowed. If you forgot a quick line of dialogue or something else important, you should use the "Edit" feature and revise your post accordingly. However, please do not edit your post when people have already responded to your post. The only time where it is acceptable to double post is if your character is the only character in the thread.

The board is PG-13. Keep it, for the most part, clean. We know that the world of Mistborn is fairly dark, but that is merely from the violent setting. There should not be harsh cursing, nor should there be explicit sexual content. Brandon Sanderson was able to keep his Mistborn books quite clean in this regard, and we expect the same. For more details on what curses are allowed, see the Style Guide.

Signatures

Feel free to include images in your signatures. However, don't make them too wide that they expand the width of the forum - that means no wider than 530 pixels. No one enjoys horizontal scrolling. Also, don't have so many images that people must scroll forever to get to the next post. We reserve the right to edit images out of users' signatures if they are too large.

When choosing an image to use for a character signature, please keep in mind the world of the Final Empire. We get that pictures featuring period attire can be hard to find if you don't know where to look, but at least try to make it look somewhat appropriate to the world. Things like green plants or overly modern attire tend to break the immersion factor we strive for, and are best avoided if you can help it.

When you have attached NPCs and other character accounts, please list these in each of your characters' signatures as well.

Spamming

Please, no advertising is acceptable in any form on the site. This includes, but is not limited to, topics, the Personal Message (PM) system, signatures, and the chat box.

And of course, never link to explicit materials. You shouldn't be doing that anyways, because that's against 17th Shard's policy. ;)

Other Restrictions

Don't criticize other members. It's called flaming, and no one likes it. We know you guys can be mature about things. If someone is flaming you, alert the administrators, and don't provoke them--that will simply make matters worse.

Really, the most important thing you should take from this topic: no god-modding! God-modding is when your character is doing things or acting far beyond what he could actually do if this was real. This includes randomly showing up in a place they would never truly be, having knowledge they wouldn't actually have, being overpowered and doing things like defeating the Lord Ruler, etc. God-modding is also when you control other people's characters. It's something that can ruin the game, so please avoid this.

Administrators' Roles

The administration staff isn't here to ruin your fun. They are here to preserve the storytelling in the RP. Above all, what an RP is is really a communally written book. We are all storytellers in one way or another. The rules and the staff are here to ensure that story. Please respect the staff's decisions.

This is a style guide designed for a message board format. It is by no means complete, but contains essential guidelines to this format and the Mistborn world.

1. Write in prose, not in screenplay format, as if one was writing a novel.

Quote

Bad -? Kelsier: You want a fight? Well, you've got it! *charges*

Good -? Kelsier burned steel. "You want a fight?" he asked. "Well, you've got it!" He charged the Inquisitor.

2. Use third person limited viewpoint. Third person is when you utilize pronouns like "he" and "she", not "I". Strike a balance between he/she and the character's name. Furthermore, "limited" viewpoint means that when writing from a character's viewpoint, you may only use information that character can know. That is, do not include informations about NPCs or other PCs that your character would not know.

Quote

Bad - Kelsier sighed. Vin was hungry. Poor thing, he thought, she probably hasn't had a decent meal in ages.

Good - Kelsier sighed. Vin's stomach growled. Poor thing, he thought, she probably hasn't had a decent meal in ages.

3. Use an empty line in between paragraphs. In forum software, we cannot use indents to identify the start of a new paragraph. Put a new line between each paragraph instead.

Quote

Bad - "Aerouna here has slain Lord Buvidas for his... indiscretion," the Lord Ruler said. Gethen struggled to not gasp--he had known Lady Aerouna, many years ago. She was beautiful enough that she'd been sought after by many, and now that Aerouna was gone. Still, she was a powerful Allomancer. It made sense she would become an Inquisitor. "How do you feel the hunt is proceeding, Lordslayer?"
Lordslayer. Gethen shivered.
"Flawlessly, Lord Ruler," Aerouna replied.

Good - "Aerouna here has slain Lord Buvidas for his... indiscretion," the Lord Ruler said.

4. Do not make entire posts in a single color, or alter the entire post into a different size, font, style. Use the forum default; it's easier on the eyes. To do this, simply do not add any extraneous tags to your post. It permissable to use a different color to emphasize a character's dialogue.

Quote

Bad - Admittedly, Sige was afraid. What was down there, a Steel Inquisitor? So much for the secrecy of the hideout. This was what the crew got for following Arn's stupid vision. Doing jobs for skaa rebels had been lunacy. In retrospect, Sige should have ran with the few boxings he had the minute he figured out what they were doing.

Good - Admittedly, Sige was afraid.

5. Italicize complete internal character thoughts.

Quote

Bad - The Lord Ruler sat back in His throne, shaking His head sadly. Yes, my Penitance shall require much indeed, Gethen thought, thinking of the razors sinking into his skin.

Good - The Lord Ruler sat back in His throne, shaking His head sadly. Yes, my Penitance shall require much indeed, Gethen thought, thinking of the razors sinking into his skin.

6. Keep paragraphs to approximately 4-6 sentences long when writing long sections of prose. This ensures that there is not a huge wall of text, which decreases readability. Unless you have reason otherwise, no more than six sentences per paragraph. One sentence paragraphs are acceptable as long as it is not in abundance.

7. Skaa characters typically do not have family names, but nobility will always have a first name and a family name. Steel Ministry characters will originally have a first name and a family name--so Ministry character accounts should include both--but in the RP, they are not referred to by family name.

8. Naming conventions: kandra names are one word that have two capital letters, like MeLaan and TenSoon. For other names, avoid the use of apostrophes or other punctuation in the name itself.

9. Capitalization should not be used for Allomantic metals, but should be used for proper nouns.
Things to be capitalized:
Names and House Names - Venture, Elariel, Tekiel, Kelsier, Vin, etc.
Metallic Arts and Users of the Metallic Arts - Allomancy, Mistborn, Misting, Feruchemy, Feruchemical, Feruchemist, Hemalurgy, Inquisitor, Thug, Smoker, etc.
Specific Terms - the Well of Ascension, the Deepness, the Hero of Ages, the Lord Ruler, the Final Empire, Steel Ministry, etc.
Cantons in the Steel Ministry - Canton of Orthodoxy, Canton of Inquisition, etc.
Locations - Dominance, Luthadel, Fadrex City, Urteau, Ashmounts, Pits of Hathsin, etc.
Individual Cultures and Organizations - Terris, Khlennium, Synod, Keepers, Worldbringers, etc.
Honoriffics - Master Vaht, Lord, Lady, etc.
The first letter of a sentence.

Things to not be capitalized:
Names of Races - humans, koloss, kandra, mistwraiths,
Divisions in the Final Empire - skaa, noble, nobility
Steel Ministry Rankings when not used as an honorific - obligator, prelan, high prelan, lord prelan, etc.
Terms with the Nobility when not referring to a specific case - keep, house, manor,
Metal names and variants - iron, steel, tin, pewter, copper, coppermind, coppercloud, atium, bronze spike, etc.
Verbs and Modifiers related to Metallic Arts - burn, flare, store, tap, charge, spike, atium shadow, pulse, etc.
Mundane terms - boxing, mists, ashfalls, streetslot, etc.
