The duel commenced and Magnus watched intently, both sides. He was as impartial as he could be where bullies were involved. He wondered who would land the first hit, and who would move first. It was often easy to determine the outcome of a duel from watching the first few moments.

When they boy was uncertainly staring at Magnus instead of his opponent, Magnus knew exactly how this would go. The boy hardly even tried. The Deveaux girl was actually taking this seriously. More of her reputation (and if you truly thought about it, the reputation of female duelists) was at stake. These pubescent miscreants would remember this for a long time to come, if the Deveaux girl won. They might not underestimate women as much in the future if she managed to beat them. He didn't hold out much hope of them completely changing their mind, but perhaps they would think twice about making comments such as the ones they made to her.

The Deveaux girl's strategy was clear. She was waiting to see how he fought. The little lord fought poorly. It was not due to a lack of training, it was instead due to a lack of trying. The boy threw the duel so that he would not suffer the wrath of Magnus Venture.

Magnus' face was hard. He hated anyone who gave up to save face. Get yourself into a situation, get yourself out of it. Self-reliance. If this boy was ever going to make it in the world... someday he would have to learn that. He was sure that his parents got him out of any trouble he had been in before. Magnus could never be that kind of parent.

"This is a duel. If you're a man, act like it."

I like this girl, Magnus thought to himself. She was bold. Perhaps he would keep his eye on her.

"Reset," Magnus said stepping in. "The girl is right. If you do not try, you'll surely anger me more than if you were to win by your own right." Magnus reached forward with the parasol between the pair, making sure they were equal distance from it on either side.

He marked the start of the duel again, using the parasol before retreating from their makeshift arena.

He had a feeling he knew how this second round would turn out before it had even begun.

Luci was extremely grateful when Lord Magnus, agreeing with her assessment, called for a reset. As soon as he stepped in, Luci removed her cane from her opponent's throat, swishing it back down to her side as she paced backwards to the appropriate distance. She was amazed how readily the cane responded to her movements; despite being heavier and longer than her own, it wasn't as difficult to get used to as she'd feared. The balance was perfect, allowing her to use her more agile dueling style to maximum efficiency. Of course she still wasn't as good with it as her own cane, but she was probably as good with this cane as she could possibly be using one that wasn't hers.

Lord Troglodyte snatched up his cane with a growl, stalking back to his stating position. His troupe of jackals was jeering at him now, until he cursed at them to shut up. Well, if she and Lord Magnus hadn't got through to him, the contempt of his fellows certainly would.

And sure enough, as soon as the start was called, he charged forward with a snarl, raising his cane as if to beat her senseless with it. He certainly intended to fight as hard as he could, but he was either so blind with rage or so much of a thug that he certainly wasn't fighting as smart as he could. Luci stepped lightly to the side, batting aside his initial charge with effortless ease.

He stumbled past, and Luci spun to face him, skirts flaring. She suppressed a surge of annoyance at that - when sparring with her friends, she preferred trousers - but it couldn't be helped. Situations like these were exactly why Damien insisted she practiced in dresses at least half of the time, and she had never been more grateful for it than now.

The duel continued in much similar fashion: Lord Troglodyte recklessly rushing in while Luci danced around him in flashes of lace and silk, countering his aggressive onslaught with an agile and evasive style. He pressed hard, and it was all she could do sometimes to step far enough out of the way or get her cane up in time, but she refused to lose her cool, instead remaining focused on her task.

Her opponent, by contrast, was becoming more and more agitated that she wasn't yielding, which led to him becoming increasingly careless in his haste and anger. Luci scored one clean hit after another, until he finally put too much force into the final charge. She stepped out of the way as usual, and unable to catch himself, Lord Troglodyte crashed face first into the cobblestones and ash. Resisting the urge to shake her head, Luci stepped calmly over and lowered her cane to his throat to end the duel.

Once Lord Magnus called for a halt, it would be over.

The second duel went better than the first. As Magnus suspected, the Deveaux girl took the upper hand almost immediately. She easily sidestepped his attacks, crude as they were. He was obviously not trained very well. He continued using heavy handed, power attacks. He wasn't taking into account that the girl was smaller than him and could easily dodge attacks like that.

If Magnus were in his place, he would vary those attacks to keep his opponent guessing. Of course, he would never be brash enough to get challenged by a woman to a duel in public. Magnus was too much of a true Gentleman Noble.

It was a good thing that Magnus was present for this duel. He had a feeling that this Deveaux girl would have come out worse for wear when it was over. He could see the tension rising in the young man's gang of friends. Out of the corner of his eye, he could just make out one of them, close to the front of the group tightening his grip on his dueling cane. Magnus did not take his attention completely away from the dueling, but he did take note of their agitated state. Perhaps this self-important noble thought that the odds were in their favor. They did outnumber Magnus, Broderick and the Deveaux girl two to one.

What they, in their youth, did not realize was they were not as immortal as the Lord Ruler. They were also not as practiced as Magnus. It had obviously been too long since Magnus was a public spectacle for them to understand exactly who it was that stood before them, judging the duel.

As the final blow was struck, Magnus had time to call the end of the duel. "Stay," He called with a commanding voice.

Magnus did not to think his next move out clearly. Feeling for his metals within him, he burned the pewter he knew he had stored up and his movements became quicker, more graceful. The Deveaux girl was facing away from the rest of the crowd of boys who all surged forward, the blonde one at the front, leading the "attack." If Magnus hadn't been there, this Deveaux girl would have been at the end of six or more dueling canes by herself.

Violence was not the way to express frustration at people who could retaliate. No matter how good you thought you were, your opponent always had the upper hand if you didn't have a level head.

He stepped between Luci and the oncoming bullies. Their leader was down and they wanted to teach her a lesson. Magnus stood between her and the onslaught, brandishing the only thing he had readily available -- Lucille's parasol. He put it in front of him as if he were holding a dueling cane, much the same as Lucille had tried to do earlier.

The boys spread out as they came forward, trying to encircle them. Magnus flipped the parasol around so he was holding the lace. The carved handle of this particular parasol curved around slightly, tapering off as it did so. He could use it to disarm one of them.

He did just that, disarming one, flipping the dueling cane out of his hand and away from the group. He would have to run the opposite direction to fetch it. Magnus swung the parasol around, to distract another of the boys while he grabbed for his dueling cane with his bare hand. If he was not a Pewterarm, he would never have attempted such a move. Magnus twisted and wrenched the weapon from the boy's poor grip.

He used a combination of the dueling cane and the parasol to meet the new leader's swing for him, the two weapons creating an X and the boy's dueling cane met them at the center... The blonde boy had a look of shock on his face.

That still left two boys and the one that Lucille duelled. "Do you really think it wise to attack two known Pewterarms, and a woman who just bested your friend in a duel?" Magnus asked, incredulity resounding in his voice.

Broderick whistled appreciatively the first time Luci so handily disarmed her tormentor. He'd known she was trained in self defense thanks to the infamous fountain incident, but to be trained as a duelist as well? Just who was Lucille Deveaux?

He also saw now why Father had barred him from intervening. While a different woman might have appreciated his swift action, in this case he would have just been interfering, and Luci might have been offended by his failure to see that she could take care of herself. Broderick was usually pretty good at spotting when a man had been trained properly, but a woman's skirts hid her stance and gait, making it more difficult. But Father, being Father, had spotted it right away. It was a stark reminder of the work he had yet to do.

The duel reset, and the assailant, now thoroughly provoked, seemed bent on not only defeating Luci, but on hurting her as well. He swung far too hard, and Broderick wouldn't have been surprised to see him take a cheap shot or three. Thankfully he didn't, most likely because Father was watching, but with the way Luci conducted herself, he was confident she could have handled it regardless.

Predictably, she won the duel handily, while the lead bully received a thorough humiliation in the form of a woman's cane at his throat while he lay facedown in the ash. Unfortunately, the rest of the pack of dogs decided, foolishly, to rush in, and Father disarmed three of them before Broderick had a chance to move. Not to be outdone, he burned pewter just long enough to give him the burst of speed he needed to intercept one of the other two. These louts weren't worth a waste of Allomancy, but he was far enough away from the action to start with that a quick surge would help him arrive in time.

He extinguished his metal just in time to intercept the dueling cane of a boy with dark, curly hair. The idiot then tried to throw a low punch at Broderick's gut., but Broderick easily caught his wrist, using it to spin him around and push him away. He stumbled, and Broderick turned in time to smack the wrist of a second boy with his cane. He didn't strike hard enough to injure the bone, but the sudden smarting pain did make him drop his dueling cane. Broderick kicked it away, then spun back around to catch the dark-haired boy's cane again, parrying in such a way that it flew from its owner's hand. Hilariously enough, it almost hit one of the boys Father had disarmed. Almost.

Now, to group up with Luci so they could stop this fight once and for all.

When Lords Magnus and Broderick jumped into the fray, Luci thought for sure that was the end of it. They put the other two out of commission quickly, before she could even attempt to join them, though that was probably for the best. She had skill, but she wasn't arrogant enough to fail to realize that she'd be getting in the way of the more experienced combatants.

"Do you really think it wise to attack two known Pewterarms, and a woman who just bested your friend in a duel?" Lord Magnus asked, an obvious note of incredulity in his voice. Luci was inclined to agree with him; just how delusional were these men?

Very much so, apparently, she realized as a hand closed around her ankle.

She had only a split second to register the thought as the world was suddenly pulled out from under her like a rug. She acted without thinking, dropping the cane to break her fall the way Damien had taught her. She'd have to thank him for drilling her on that incessantly no matter how much she complained.

Even with her fall broken, though, her assailant wasn't through with her. She caught sight of him looming over her just in time to reach under the skirts on her right side and grab hold of the blade concealed in her garter. By the time he reached her neck with his bare hand, she had the edge of an obsidian knife held to his.

He froze, seething in anger, but she could see the hesitation taking hold underneath. He wanted to dare her to do it; but did he dare gamble with his own life like that? She was a Deveaux, after all; who could say what she might do?

Well. What she would do was pray to the Lord Ruler that one or both of her new Pewterarm friends would intervene before he forced her hand. Because now that she had her knife to someone's throat, she realized quite acutely that the last thing in the world she wanted to do was use it.

There was a change in the mood as soon as Lucille pulled out the knife -- which looked like obsidian. She was smart to carry one. If Magnus had a daughter he would have suggested that she carry one when unaccompanied in Luthadel as well. He then let his crossed "weapons" fall as the bully's friends in front of him were visibly scared that this was taken to the next level. They could see the knife at their friend's neck, and decided that it was not worth their lives.

Luckily for them, Magnus knew that it was not worth their lives either.

Magnus dropped the inferior dueling cane. He set the parasol on the ground. He burned pewter again, but more as a way to quickly and gracefully get to where Lucille and the ringleader were. His motions were quick, and precise. He twisted the boy's arm painfully up behind his back. Magnus stopped burning pewter so that he did not run the risk of breaking the boy's arm.

He held the boy's arm in place by the wrist, twisting it enough so that the boy knew Magnus was in control. Magnus pulled him away from Lucille's knife. With the situation diffused, Magnus now needed a few pieces of information before he could successfully and fairly resolve it.

"Good show, but we're finsihed." Magnus said in the boy's ear. "What is your name?"

The boy did not answer immediately and Magnus put a little more pressure on his wrist. A yelp followed by a mumble. "Chestin Sureau."

"My lady, with your permission, I will escort Lord Chestin here to Keep Sureau, and Broderick will escort you to where you were originally headed. I'm certain that Lord Chestin is very apologetic, and you will receive a public, and sincere apology when he next gets the chance."

The attacker froze, and Luci knew the fight was finally over. Before she could even sigh with relief, a very stern-looking Lord Magnus loomed over them, and suddenly, he was holding the boy by the arm in such a way that the offender had no choice but to hang practically limp to keep from having his arm broken. And from what Luci could tell, it didn't look like he even needed pewter to do it. She'd have to ask Damien to teach her that maneuver.

She quickly sheathed her knife and picked up Lord Magnus's cane, and by the time she started dusting it off, Lord Broderick was at her side, offering a hand up, which she accepted. While she finished clearing dirt and ash off the cane, Lord Magnus asked the boy's name - why wasn't she surprised he was a Sureau? - and made arrangements to properly get everyone home. He even seemed to be using his etiquette in an almost aggressive matter - aggressive towards Chestin Sureau, that is. Every gentlemanly turn of phrase was a dagger in Chestin's side, exposing his flaws and failures while being perfectly genteel and polite towards Luci herself.

It was an approach of which Luci gleefully approved, though of course she doubted he cared much about her approval one way or the other.

"That would be most agreeable, my Lord, and I am wholeheartedly grateful for your aid. And to you as well, of course, Lord Broderick." He grinned proudly at that, and she couldn't help but smile. It quickly vanished, though, replaced by a troubled expression.

"I must apologize, though, for dropping your cane. Especially under such circumstances." Those circumstances, of course, being the sheer significance of him allowing her to touch, let alone use, his personal weapon. After double-checking that he still had a grip on Chestin, she stepped forward, holding the cane by the handle and resting the other end on her off hand. With a smooth motion, she switched her hold so that it was laying flat across her open palms, and only then did she offer it to him, bowing slightly. It was technically a masculine gesture, especially with her back straight and feet together, but it was the formal way to present a cane or sword to a person of higher rank. Why should it matter if she was wearing a skirt or trousers?

"Thank you again for entrusting it to me."

It seemed that this girl could tell what Magnus was getting at with his polite tone. She seemed to reciprocate it. He accepted the cane as graciously as he could while still holding Chestin's arm up behind the poor boy's back.

"Thank you," Magnus said. Though the gesture was slightly strange coming from a girl, he appreciated it all the same. He liked the formalities when it came to dueling. They were a part of the ritual of the game. The girl had passed Magnus' test.

The girl.

He still didn't know the girl's name. She seemed to already be acquainted with Broderick, as far as he could tell.

"Although an apology is not necessary. Dropping the cane was the right move. Plus, it cleans fairly easily. It is not often that I lend my cane out. It is not often I come across anyone else who can weild it. It is weighted, as I'm sure you guessed. Most Pewterarm's canes are... but an accomplished duelist should be able to use any type of cane at any moment's notice." Magnus fell into the familiar teaching rhythm once he started to talk but abruptly stopped himself, remembering the task at hand. He reminisced for half a moment about a duel he participated in where he was given another man's cane as a challenge in the arena, less than a moment before a duel started.

"Before we part, my lady, I realize that I never did catch your name. I must know who to commend for training such a talented duelist." He said, keeping the polite, formal tone.

Just like that, they had launched into what felt like a lesson. Lord Magnus was using the patient tone of a strict but not unfair teacher - the kind who had incredibly high standards, but so long as you made the effort, would make sure you met them if it killed you. It was quite like Damien, actually, though of course without the gentle, familiar tone that he could never quite get rid of when addressing her. Even if she was the only one who noticed sometimes.

In fact, she was so immediately brought to attention by that tone that she momentarily forgot what was happening around them. It wasn't until Lord Magnus cut himself off that she remembered they were having a teaching moment while he was holding a violent criminal with one hand, casual as could be.

"Before we part, my lady, I realize that I never did catch your name. I must know who to commend for training such a talented duelist."

Luci flushed deeply at such high praise, curtsying a little lower than she normally would - out of respect, gratitude, and in hopes that it would hide her embarrassed but pleased expression.

"Lucille Deveaux, My Lord. It is an honor to make your acquaintance. My instructor is my cousin, Lord Damien Deveaux."

Exactly as Magnus thought. She had the look of Deveaux, but Magnus still liked being right in his guesses. He bowed slightly to Lucille. It was not out of disrespect, obviously, holding Chestin's arm made it hard to to do anything else. His bow also fit his station, because he was above her in rank. He decided he wouldn't dwell on it.

"As I'm sure you already know, this is my son Broderick, and I am Magnus Venture." He paused for a beat and then added "At your service, my lady. Please do not hesitate to find me should you need any assistance in the future."

He looked to Broderick. "Escort her home, and meet me at the keep. We are not done with today's training session. I expect I shall be there in less than an hour. Do not dawdle."
