Ferrah couldn't help but beam as she glided gracefully through the Elariel entry-way. She was in love. Collette would surely scoff at her feelings, or say that things were progressing too fast, that it was too soon to tell, but Ferrah just knew that this time, things were different.

She had barely been able to contain her excitement on the coach ride from Keep Hasting. She and Colette had shared a carriage, and she had caught her cousin rolling her eyes at Ferrah's enthusiasm. For once, Ferrah didn't care about Colette's derision. For once, she had something that Colette didn't--the affection of her very own prince charming. Ferrah would have preferred, of course, to have ridden in the carriage with her date, rather than with her best friend, of course, but she could hardly expect him to come and pick her up when the ball was being hosted at his own keep.

Instead of her usual pastel tones, Ferrah had chosen a gown with a dark and rich teal hue, trimmed in silver--Elariel colours. She noted as several of the assembled Luthadel elite began to whisper as they took notice of her outfit, breaking off into bears, not doubt to gossip about the likelihood of an Elariel-Brehaut alliance. Let them whisper, Ferrah didn't care. Tonight, she was untouchable.

She caught sight of Aaron almost immediately. He was standing near the head table, his posture relaxed, apparently deep in conversation with his sister. At the sight of his clever grin, Ferrah felt her pulse quicken slightly as she remembered twining her fingers into that stylishly unruly hair after the mid-week ball as the couple shared their first passionate kiss. She had been walking on ash-flakes ever since that day.

Ferrah didn't approach Aaron immediately--it wouldn't do to seem clingy or desperate at this stage. She had to appear calm and confident in their relationship, or opportunists would take her possessiveness as a sign that Aaron wasn't fully committed to her. They had only been courting a little over a week of course, barely enough time for people to start whispering, especially given Aaron's penchant for moving from one courtship to the next, but Ferrah knew what they had was special. She would not be like those other girls.

Ferrah sat down at her assigned seat, barely paying attention as Colette and the other girls filed in next to her. In her mind, dinner was already over, and Aaron was catching her gaze from across the hall, striding confidently across the floor so he could take her hand and ask her to dance.

Dinner began, and Ferrah did her best to banish the day dreams. Colette was still depending on her to help keep the group in line, of course. She couldn't let her relationship with Aaron become a distraction from her duties, or Colette would see to it that it ended. Ferrah wondered, idly, how a marriage to Aaron would change her friendship with Colette. Once they wed, Ferrah's would join a house more powerful than Colette's own, and her husband would be only a few steps away from the lordship itself!

After what seemed like eternity, dinner ended, and established couples began to make their way on to the dance floor. Ferrah smiled smugly--none of the other girls had come with dates that evening. While they would be waiting anxiously, wondering who would ask them to dance, Ferrah could relax, secure in the knowledge that Aaron Elariel was on his way to sweep her off her feet.

Aaron stood up form his place had the head table, and Ferrah saw his glance slide over to her table. Finally, He placed a hand on his sister's shoulder, completed whatever conversation they had been having, and then began making his way across the room. Ferrah sat up straight in her seat, following Aaron's route and planning in her mind exactly how she would respond to whatever witty line he greeted her with, take his hand, and let him lead her on to the dance floor. The other girls took notice of her excitement, and Ferrah couldn't help but exult in their envy.
"Lady Colette" Aaron performed a polite bow as he approached the table, stopping in front of Colette's chair instead of Ferrah's. "I hope you are enjoying the evening. I wonder, would you care to share a dance with me?"

Ferrah froze. This can't be happening. That kiss! He loves me, I know he does. Ferrah clasped her hands tightly in her lap, forcing herself to remain calm. Her gaze shifted from Aaron to Colette. Colette knew how Ferrah felt--she had spent the whole trip gushing about Aaron. Colette was her friend--she would want Ferrah to be happy. Surely she would turn Aaron down, and deftly turn his attention back to Ferrah where it belonged.

Colette's gaze flicked to the side, and her eyes met Ferrah's in for an instant before settling back on Aaron. "Of course, Lord Aaron. I would be delighted." Colette accepted Aaron's hand and rose gracefully from her seat. "Please excuse me ladies--we can finish our conversation later." Colette met the gaze of each of the girls in turn, ending with Ferrah. Back off, those eyes said, This is my opportunity. Remember your place. Ferrah smiled weakly, fighting to stop tears from appearing in her eyes. She was Colette's loyal lieutenant. Dancing with Aaron was an opportunity for Colette to advance her position among Luthadel's elite, and potentially give her an edge against Caden. Of course she needed to support Colette, and be happy for her.

Wasn't that what friends were for?

Daerra noticed Ferrah the moment she walked into the ballroom, and knew that it was time to put one of her schemes into action. Colette Hasting was growing too powerful in the Luthadel social scene--someone needed to do something to disrupt things and throw a little chaos into the mix. It was almost too perfect--everyone would know exactly what statement Ferrah was trying to make, wearing those colours to an Elariel ball. Daerra almost felt sorry for the girl, but that wouldn't stop her from making use of her.

"Aaron, we need to talk." Aaron turned from where he had been chatting with Mikhail--Daerra had plans for dealing with him as well, of course, but those would have to wait for another day.

"Yes of course," he said, nodding politely to Mikhail and then moving further down the table towards a spot where he and Daerra could have a modicum of privacy. "What's going on now? What social faux-pas have I committed now? I know it's not my outfit... do I have something in my teeth?"

Daerra rolled her eyes. How was Aaron so deft at getting under her skin? Perhaps, in a way, he really was their father's son, despite all their differences.

"It's about that woman you've been seeing. Ferrah Brehaut."

"Ferrah? What about her? Is she here?"

Daerra glanced covertly to the side, subtly indicating which direction Aaron should look in. "Don't let her notice you are looking." Aaron eyes flicked to the side and back.

"She's looking fetching tonight, isn't she? Is there something I'm not seeing."

"Her gown, dumb-dumb. She's wearing Elariel colours to an Elariel ball. She's basically declaring to the whole city that you and she are entering into a formal relationship. Please tell me you haven't done something foolish and given her a handkerchief or something." Daerra was fairly certain no tokens of affection had been exchanged--Aaron was notoriously wary of commitment, and Daerra's spies would have caught something that important. It always paid to be certain, and planting the idea that people had been whispering about handkerchiefs in Aaron's head wouldn't hurt either.

"Lord Ruler, of course not! I mean, we've barely been courting for over a week! Ferrah's nice, and pretty as polished silver, but I've barely gotten to know her. You haven't heard anything have you?" Aaron ran his hand through his hair, an nervous tick. "We kissed in the carriage the other night. It was enjoyable, but I thought we were just having fun. What do you think gave her the idea that... that..."

"That there's a union in the works?" Aaron gulped. "I honestly have no idea Aaron, but we should take care of this before is spirals out of control."

Aaron nodded. "Yes, you're right of course. But what should I do? She's a really sweet person--I don't want to hurt her feelings."

"Don't worry about her feelings Aaron. Rejection might sting a little, but she'll be fine. You've only gone to a few balls together--she should know better than to jump to such conclusions." Daerra tapped a finger against her cheek, pretending to brainstorm a solution. "No need to do anything explicit. Why not just ask someone else to dance? You two aren't formally involved, so it wouldn't be taboo, and it would let her safe face instead of rejection her outright. She can play off her wardrobe choice as a bold statement, without letting on that she misread your feelings for her."

"Dance with someone else? Are you sure? Doesn't that seem a little cold?"

"Aaron, trust me. Taking her aside and speaking with her might only fuel her fantasy, and spark gossip. Avoiding her at this stage keeps you free of any scandal." Daerra forced her eyes to light up, as if an idea she'd been nursing for months had just occured to her. "I know, why not ask Colette to dance?"

"Her best friend? Daerra, I know I can be clueless, but that seems like the worst possible person to ask."

"Exactly, Colette is Ferrah's best friend. Who better to pass a message along? During your dance, you can tell Colette what happened, that while you've enjoyed Ferrah's company you aren't ready for something so serious, and that perhaps you should take a break from seeing each other. Colette can pass the message along, and Ferrah can save face without sparking more gossip than she already has."

"I guess that make sense, but won't she think the worst as soon as I approach Colette? I really don't want to make a scene."

"I'll keep my eye on her, and intervene if need be. Don't worry, at least one of us knows how to be subtle."

Aaron nodded. "All right, you do know best." He shook his head, "Honestly, I don't know how I keep getting myself into these situations. What would I do without you?"

"I don't know," she said, allowing herself to laugh. "But really, what are big sister's for, if not to keep their brother's out of trouble?"
