Nevan Venture was walking on air. He was flying. He could have leapt down from the top of Keep Deveaux to his carriage, waiting in the courtyard below, and been perfectly fine. While he had to keep his conversation with Camille close to the heart - for now - it filled him with a strange thrill inside to know that once he got through the mess that would be the week ahead, she would be waiting for him on the other side. And not because their parents had put her there, but because she wanted to be there. Waiting. For him. It was downright unbelievable.

Well. He should arguably tell Father, but that was different. It was Father, after all. Still, he'd lingered longer than he meant to with Camille, and evening was fast approaching. He'd need to get back to Keep Venture in time for dinner, so he hastened downstairs, trying very hard to look dignified and not like he was skipping with joy on the way.

It was time to make some plans.

Etienne had passed Cami in the hall and done a double take at the expression on her face - she hadn't even seemed to see him, but she was filled with an inner glow that even Etienne, as stupid as he was, couldn't have missed. He did not understand where it had come from. He'd almost gone to her to ask, but had pulled back, afraid that smile would be replaced by the one that never touched her eyes if Etienne brushed up against it.

He'd gone on instead, but before long he had spotted Nevan Venture and seen the same thing. Etienne stood still and stared at him for a time. He recalled the way that Cami and Nevan had danced at the Casuana ball, the connection that seemed to exist between them, but Cami was an excellent dancer, and Nevan was talented as well, so he'd thought - it was only that. But today, Cami's face suggested that Nevan had somehow reached right through Cami's armor. The Venture heir had done what Etienne had never been able to do.

Etienne could not quite sort out how he felt about it. It was good to see Cami like that. He'd never thought he'd see her really smile again. He should be... grateful to Nevan, but Etienne found a mixture of uncertainty and guilt. All of this was part of a Deveaux scheme. Augustin was selling his daughter to forge a closer alliance with Venture. What did Nevan want? What was he after? And what would he do to Cami in the end? Would he let her down, the way that Etienne had, when he learned the truth? Or would he instead see the opportunity that her power offered, and like her father, value that power more than his cousin?

They moved in different circles. Nevan was the responsible type, not the sort of person that Etienne usually went out of his way to spend time around. Today though, he moved purposefully to intercept him, and came up next to Nevan with a bright grin. "Hello, Lord Nevan!"

A voice called out, and Nevan stopped, turning to see who had called him back to reality. It turned out to be Etienne Deveaux, standing right next to him and grinning cheerfully as usual. While the two men rarely crossed paths in society, Nevan did know a little about Etienne, as a gentleman of his station should know his peers. Quick with a joke or a smile, but a little irresponsible. Nevan had never had any particular reason to get to know him better, though he seemed to be good company as long as the topic weren't serious. He seemed eager to catch Nevan now, however; something to do with Camille, maybe? Was she close with her cousin?

"Good evening, Lord Etienne," he said with a warm smile and a polite nod. "I trust I find you well? I was just visiting your cousin, the Lady Camille."

Nevan had one of those faces that would have lent itself well to mischief, with a smile that quirked off-center even when he meant it to be polite. He was a straight arrow, though; he did everything he was supposed to do and ticked off all the boxes a nobleman should. That was exactly what his greeting did, too. Ticked off the boxes. Good evening instead of hello, a wish for Etienne's well-being, and of course he had been here to court Cami. What were you supposed to make out of somebody like that? Just exactly what he wanted you to, no doubt, the perfect heir of the perfect House.

Well, Etienne was not going to follow the rules of this conversation, which said he was supposed to announce himself doing well indeed and how he hoped that Nevan was, too. "Each day brings me a little closer to death," Etienne pronounced in direly morbid and sepulchral tones. "As it does us all. I hope the grave does not call you too strongly today, Lord Nevan."

Um. What? Nevan blinked in confusion, and found himself having to work harder than usual to maintain his expression of vague pleasantry. He did allow a little concern to slip through, though. What in the world was Lord Etienne going on about? He'd expected witty quips, judging by the other man's reputation, not whatever this was.

"I'm glad to say that it doesn't," he said, a little uncertain of how to proceed with the conversation. But then, there was one thing he could say that was both true and applicable to the current topic, and the very thought made him smile warmly.

"In fact, I'm quite happy to report that I've rarely, if ever, felt so alive."

"Marvellous," Etienne pronounced this. He debated whether or not to try looming; this was not going to be a successful effort when Nevan Venture was about six and a half feet tall, though. It took a Damien to loom over someone like that - Damien could have loomed over anyone, of course, no matter how tall they were. He was a looming sort of person, very difficult to ignore.

Etienne had to make do with other tools. He eyed Nevan Venture, whose expression had been absolutely bland and almost milquetoast. That would not do at all. Nevan warmed up a few moments later, but... did he have a sense of humor? Was he a decent person? Did he actually care a fig about anything but his House's interests? Nothing that Nevan Venture had ever done in what Etienne knew of his life gave any indication of that. "So... what is it then that has you in such vital spirits?"

Why? Was it not obvious? Nevan paused, looking back the way he'd come, as if he might catch a glimpse of Camille one last time. But she'd excused herself to dress for dinner and would have vanished into her suite by now. Would there really come a day when they might do simple, routine things like that together?

Never let your wife's maid put her jewelry on when you're in the room, Father had told him when he was old enough to start learning about marriage and relationships. Put it on her yourself, and take that moment to show some affection. Stroke her cheek or give her a compliment. If you don't show her you care during the little moments, she'll never know. And then he'd laid out some of Mother's old jewelry and made him practice doing and undoing the clasps until he was familiar with it. The thought of being able to share such moments of innocent intimacy with Camille filled Nevan with a warmth he hadn't expected, and he caught himself smiling like an idiot at the empty hallway behind him.

"Why, your lady cousin, of course," he said, finally pulling his gaze away from the hall and back to Etienne. He couldn't seem to get rid of the smile, though.

But then, right now, he didn't really want to.
