The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

Garrett didn't know what Augustin meant that his sister would be too old to introduce to active duty... but he was almost grateful for it. He didn't want to intentionally put her into that situation. He would rather not see her death.

"As long as my sister can learn self defense, and have ample opportunity to pursue physical training - if she wishes - I will be happy," Garrett said.

He also liked the idea of a lighter workload. Having just the duties of a Mistborn, or just the duties of a Lord was one thing, but having both at once, without much help... He was tired of it, to say the least.

Augustin didn't change completely with the revelation that Garrett was a Mistborn, but it was obvious that he was happier knowing that he was getting a Mistborn. That's something that Garrett would have to remember for the future. He thought it would be a good bargaining chip, but he wasn't sure how powerful it really was. Especially with his negligence of training as of late. Garrett hadn't even thought of the potential for more Mistborn in his bloodline.

He left out the piece of information that his first marriage didn't produce an heir. Well, he didn't leave it out, but instead didn't intend on making it a point to dwell on.

"Active duty... Yes. I have been the only Atwood Mistborn in two decades. Keeping our High House status did take some effort... both openly in the political sphere and shrowded in the mists."

Augustin nodded, glad to hear that Garrett knew, at least somewhat, what he was doing as a Mistborn. How he would stack up compared to Deveaux standards was another thing entirely, but the point still stood that he had protected his house, with very little backup, in Tremredare. That counted for something, in Augustin's eyes.

But they could address Garrett's skills later. The night was wearing on, and there was still a lot of work to do.

"I witness and record this. It is done."

"Good. I want this filed with the Ministry first thing in the morning. Vaudin, your clerks will need to finish the copies in time for Thibault to be there when the doors are unlocked."

"It will be done, my Lord."

Of course it would be. Augustin took a long sip of his tea - it had appeared at some point during the night, and Augustin had been grateful for its bracing warmth throughout the process - and waved everyone out of the room. They left in a flurry of papers and writing desks, except for Severine, who merely backed away and stationed herself in a convenient corner, eyeing Garrett with a veiled mixture of appraisal and not-quite-yet decided mistrust. It would appear that she was not content to leave them alone just yet, now that she knew the truth of Garrett's Allomancy. Well, that was fine with Augustin. Severine had proven her trustworthiness and value and time and again, and he wasn't about to push her off now.

Still, it felt like the drawing room itself drew a breath of relief as the door shut behind the gaggle of personnel, and Augustin savored the silence for a moment or two before finally setting his cup down and speaking once again.

"Well, then. Welcome to Deveaux."
