Special Skills: Reading, Writing, Politicking, Mercantile Contracting, Persuasion, Deception, Mathematics, Reading people.
Strengths: Lian is good at looking out for his own. He is an expert smoker of exceptional strength, but his real skills lie in political maneuvering. Through the last thirty years he has kept Vaunter out of the spotlight of the great houses, making no enemies, and securing the allies he does have. He has made a deep study of statistics and probabilities and how they relate to trade, developing a method of actuarial science.
Weaknesses: He is absolutely hopeless at dueling and must rely on his bodyguards for protection.

Lian is reserved and introverted, both personally and politically. He has made no enemies, but few close friends either due to the distance he keeps around him. He is quiet, rarely speaking a decibel louder than is necessary. He rarely takes risks with his money or allies, and has made it his mission to keep every allomancer in House Vaunter secret. Every Tineye on the Walls of his Fellise Manor is within range of a smoker, And his lurchers, coinshots and thugs are always trained as Hazekillers. He keeps several seekers on the outer walls of Vaunter Manor.

He is distrusting of others, having been burned one time too many in the past. He has a particular dislike for Soothers and Rioters. He flares copper nearly constantly, and over the years the range and strength of his coppercloud has increased.

He treats his family kindly, but emotional displays are as rare as green leaves. He is not empty of emotion, but he chooses not to display it. In fact, he stresses and worries constantly over the financial state of his house.

He has taught his son some of his skill at political maneuvering, but where his son is brazen and friendly, he is conservative and gracious. In political or mercantile victory he never gloats, and is surprisingly magnanimous.

Lian Vaunter was raised from birth to take over the house and the family business. When other noblemen were learning to duel and ride, he learned to manipulate. He learned business, he was coached in history, he was versed in mathematics and social sciences. His father was harsh and strict, and would have Lian whipped if he missed lessons or learned too slowly. All the boyishness he once possessed was swiftly replaced with silent efficiency.

Like all nobles, he was beaten around the age of eight and tested as an allomancer. He snapped, becoming a smoker, but his impatient father nearly dismissed him as an heir when the seeker testing him detected no allomantic pulses. Believing he had no powers, his father treated him like refuse to be swept under the rug. He was no longer required to attend lessons, but he attended them anyway. First, for fear of punishment, and soon to regain his father's favor. Eventually, he gave up on that, and went because he could expect no less of himself.

Four years later, due to an accident at an uncomfortable family meal, it was finally revealed that he was a Smoker, and his father restored his place in the family, but the damage was done. Lian no longer had any desire to be his father's son. This feeling only increased over the years as he witnessed his father make terrible mercantile deals and powerful enemies. He came to believe that his father was an idiot, and would bring Vaunter to ruin.

Lian couldn't allow that. He poisoned his father by degrees and became high seat at the age of twenty three. Since then, his devotion to secrecy and political neutrality have guided house Vaunter, raising it slowly from a faltering minor house with many enemies to a steady base of power with no political or mercantile rivals that wished them harm.

He married a lady from the upper echelons of house Regul. A loveless political marriage, but it soothed the wrath of Vaunter's greatest enemy. He has taught his son how to manipulate people, in the hopes that Vaunter will never again be run by an imbecile. In fact, most of his time is spent devising ways to protect his family both financially and physically.

He is currently planning a Keep in Luthadel, Expanding his mercantile and political contacts. He is especially worried about trying to secure alliances with The great houses in Luthadel. He needs the new contracts to support the massive investment he's making.

He knows he will have to make both Enemies and Allies, both of which were difficult for him. The latter, because he is less of a conversationalist and more of a manipulator, the former because he hates taking risks. However, now is not the time to gather power slowly. He was coming to Luthadel, and without an exceptional increase to House Vaunter's income, he would never be able to pay the obscene Keep Taxes the Lord Ruler required of all High Nobles. Risks would have to be taken, marriages made, trades completed, allies acquired. Without doubt, enemies would arise from the political and financial upsets he would bring, but if he did not take the risks now, he likely would not have the opportunity to elevate Vaunter to the high nobility in his lifetime.

In time, perhaps, he would be able to smooth relations with everyone, but now was not the time.

He has three children to marry off, a son and two daughters. Only his son is an allomancer, but the girls are honestly more valuable assets at the moment. Nothing cements an alignment between houses like the marriage of a beautiful young woman.

Roleplay Sample
Ash fell from the night sky. The mists were punctured and pinholed by the careless flakes. They drifted slowly, gathering moisture and picking up speed as they fell. they plinked to the ground, spreading black stains on the already soot-stained walls of Vaunter Manor. Lian stood on the highest balcony, observing the ashfall. His arms were crossed loosely in front of his chest, his back straight and defiant. He ran a finger through the gathering sludge on the bannister, regarding it with no emotion.

It reminded him of the skaa. They were the gritty black substance that stained the world. Their recent attacks on the nobility were ashflakes on his keep walls. Annoying, ugly, and rude. Still, they were not inconsequential. In fact, they were downright dangerous. He had hired hazekillers and soldiers from the surrounding countryside to protect his manor from their grimy hands. The fact that the rebellion was only in Luthadel, and there were only whispers in Fellise was irrelevant. This was his home. This was his family, and he would protect them.

He flared copper, hiding the allomancers in his Manor. He reached a decision. four hazekillers and twelve soldiers would be sent with every Vaunter that needed to travel at night, no matter the destination. Two and four would be sent during the day. The streets were no longer safe. Roshar would no doubt protest, but he was the heir. He needed to be protected more than any other. Lian would have to make it a formal order. He waved his steward forward.

Treshan bowed smoothly, earings and bracelets reflecting the light from within the keep. He wore the robes of a steward, as always, Vaunter's colors alternating in a pattern of deep V's. Black, gold, and dark green. "How may I assist you, my lord," the Terrisman asked. He was a man after Lian's own heart. Introverted, discriminating, and taciturn.

Lord Vaunter spoke softly. "Have an obligator awakened and pen and paper brought from my study. Send a skaa for a bottle of wine and tea." Lian turned slowly toward the door, dismissing his steward with a wave of his hand. Treshan went silently. Lian stepped into the tower and descended the stairs to the library. He gazed at the three story shelves, the leather-backed books and the embossed titles. Rows of books on history, accounting, trade, livestock, statistics, and probabilities. His massive rosewood desk sat in the corner of the room, a giant littered with stacks of paper.

His book was almost finished, but it was not one intended to be published. This was his work, his ambition. His Actuarial Science would raise house Vaunter from its current standing to rival even house Venture. The concepts he had developed were already being used on his plantations and holdings. His research needed to survive. It was the key to true prosperity.

He had no doubt Roshar would make good use of the knowledge. The boy was well taught, if a little flagrant. He would be able to protect Vaunter when Lian no longer could.

For now though, Lian had his work cut out for him. He needed to expand his mercantile contracts. Allies among the Great Houses were necessary. He was not an outgoing man, and meeting with high nobility made him uncomfortable. Still, if he did not develop the Contacts he needed, he would not be able to maintain the Keep. He needed to make things happen. He couldn't wait for things to happen to him.

He bent over a book. A ledger, really, published by the Canton of Finance. It listed many of the transactions made between the Great houses for the last season. With Casuana's weapon contracts unfulfilled, Hasting would likely become dominant in the weapons market. They would be expanding, especially in the light of the Skaa rebellion.

Hasting was the most important house to befriend. He would approach them for weapons and Allomantic metals, buying much more than was necessary. Doing so might earn him the ire of Casuana, Deveaux, and possibly Venture, but Hasting needed to be approached. He had played out the possibilities. He didn't like making enemies. Especially ones of such great prestige and power, but the numerous contracts he had with a score or so of minor nobility would be insufficient very soon.

He needed to expand. He had to take the risks now.

Risks made him nervous, too.

Everything seems to be in order here. Great work on the additions; they really add a lot to his character. Accepted.
