The afternoon sky was clear. The red sun pulsed overhead like an overripe fruit about to burst. It was warm. In the distance Claudia could hear the soft lapping of the water against the docks. Canal street was bustling with activity. In the shadows of a small alley, Claudia leaned against the wall weeping. It was a foolish thing, really, this crying in the corner like a spoilt child but she couldn't seem to stop.

Her face was pressed into the wall shielded by her lengthy brow tresses. Was she crying because she had been forced to kill enemies of her house this week, more than once? Was her motive more shallow, no more complicated than having to attend yet another ball unescorted? Perhaps it had been a bit of both, to begin with. Or perhaps she was crying because of father's harsh words that morning. She'd woke that morning to dreams of stones stained with dark blood and the sound of coins ripping through the air, piercing her skin. No sooner had she risen from bed than she had been summoned to attend on her father over breakfast. Alister had been in a foul mood and wasted no time demanding to know how it was she had failed to attract anyone's interest for a night as important as the Casuana ball. Claudia had stood through his lecture and made the same empty promise to do better, but there was no way to make good on that promise, no way to change things.

There had been no way she was going to stay home all day after that. Usually the destination of choice for a girl at this time was Alshtrom Square but she couldn't let herself been seen in this state. If words of her weeping reached home...

So she had slipped away from her carriage, moving into the city until she found a dark quiet corner where she would likely not see anyone who would even know who she was.

Marisha had bent to Nerid's wishes today; he had asked after they left the library to go to the canal docks. Her brother found a particular pleasure in watching the merchants, load and unload, and in watching the boats go up and down the river, although he had been horrendously seasick during his first and only trip by canal. The memory of that didn't seem to alter his pleasure in watching them. He pointed things out excitedly to Marisha, who could not always see what it was that he was talking about - Nerid was burning tin, covered by his coppercloud, and he could see much further than she could - but she let him tell her all about it. She was glad to see him this happy. He did not like being in Luthadel as much as he had liked their journey there, because Marisha was forced to keep him indoors most of the time. She couldn't allow him to go out and about, especially not on his own.

This was the first time she had heard him this excited since they came to the city.

Suddenly he paused in mid-flow, and his head tilted to one side, as if he was listening to something, but Marisha could not hear whatever his tin-enhanced senses were telling him. Then, without warning, he left her side, darting away down a street. Marisha stood still for a moment longer, taken by surprise, then began to be alarmed.

Marisha was not about to run after him, but she followed along at a quick walk; she did not want Nerid to be by himself, whatever it was that he had heard. As she followed after him, she heard it - a broken sobbing, the sound of a woman weeping. She turned down the alley and paused in the mouth of the little dead-end street, seeing Nerid approaching the woman. She was hunched over, her face pressed into the wall as if she was trying to hide herself, and her entire body was shaking with the sobs that racked her. Nerid's eyes were wide and soft with an answering sadness as he went to her.

"Brother," she said, carefully. She did not want to give a name. The woman was dressed in the finest of clothing; she was from one of the Great Houses. Marisha was certain of it. Nerid meant nothing but kindness, but Marisha understood where he did not that for nobles, grief was an intensely private thing. She was certain the woman did not want to be found crying. She would not have hidden herself down the alley otherwise. She would only resent them for seeing her in a moment of vulnerability and weakness - it was much better for them to back away, and let her alone. They could not afford to make an enemy from this.

"Risha," Nerid said quietly, not looking back at her, "she's crying, 'n she's all by herself."

"It's alright," he said to Claudia, in his slow, quiet, gentle way, reaching his arms around her shoulders without the least idea that doing something like this was unacceptable for a refined nobleman, or that Claudia might reject the contact. "Easy there, it's all going to be alright. 'N it'll all be better, it will. Promise. Don't cry, lady. Don't cry anymore."

Those were words Marisha had told him before. He echoed her now, the most comforting phrases that Nerid could think of.

Marisha stood frozen in the alleyway.

Reflexively she burned tin and pewter - for the split second before she thought to burn copper and then her coppercloud spring to life. The sudden obvious softness of the touch registered as she was turning, her eyes wide. "I --" She started to say, but she paused catching the sincere, comforting eyes of the man. She swallowed, sniffling slightly.

He was completely nonthreatening. In fact he had the most sincere expression Claudia could remember having seen since she was a child. His well cut clothes marked him as a noblemen and their simplicity told her he was far below her in station. She didn't recognize his face which in an of itself was worth noting. She managed a ragged breath and squeaked, "Please...let go. I..." As she shifted her weight slightly she caught sight of a woman at the mouth of the alley peering in at them. Her heart started hammering. Would she be caught in a scandal on top of everything else?

The damage was done already. Marisha closed her eyes for a moment, sighing quietly, then stepped forward as she heard the woman's request. Nerid let go of the woman at her words, his face slightly confused, but he still stood there next to her, reaching one hand out.

Marisha came up beside Nerid, setting her hand on his shoulder, attempting to draw him away. "Brother," she said quietly, again, still choosing not to name him, "don't trouble her." She looked briefly at the woman, then cast her eyes down again. She could not help feeling a twinge of sympathy for the stranger, though. That sobbing had been brokenhearted, with the desperation of a child; she understood why Nerid had gone to her. Marisha knew what it was like to cry that way, though she had no idea what was going on with the other woman. She never let Nerid see her cry, let alone anyone else. To be seen without a mask in place meant only to wonder who would use it against you and how.

"Your pardon, my Lady." Her voice held deep respect, as if she had seen nothing. The woman did not seem angry, but that could change. Marisha hoped she would think them completely insignificant.

She smoothed her hands over her skirt and rubbed her cheeks vigorously. "No," she said abruptly. Her eyes came up to meet first the woman's and then the mans. "If anyone has transgressed it was I. Forgive me for appearing here in so unseemly a fashion." Claudia stepped away from the wall and took the man's proffered hand, squeezing it once in gratitude. "You have shown me a great kindness. Might I...." She shook her head. To ask theirbeen privy to such kindness. names without giving hers would be in her rights, in so far as her station was above theirs but it would also be a discourtesy by the way she measured things. "I am Claudia Elariel."

Her heart was still fluttering with a mix of shock, fear and grief but she forced her face to calm and stopped burning metals. She let the man's hand go and took a step forward, trying to gather some measure of calm. There was much risk here; if these two strangers mentioned what they had seen she would be shamed and yet in the midst of her pain they had tried to comfort her. She had never before been treated so kindly by anyone except her brother and of late Mikhail hated to see her cry.

The noblewoman's eyes flickered up and she met Marisha's gaze for just a moment. To her surprise, Marisha read no resentment or anger in them, but almost - she realised it was gratitude. Marisha let her uncertainty pass away, and sympathy came to the fore as the other woman apologized. She fumbled for what to say, however, and when the woman named herself as Claudia Elariel, Marisha truly had no answer. She hadn't known Claudia by sight, but she knew her by name, and knew exactly who she was.

It was Nerid who spoke, not at all overawed by the sister of the heir to a Great House; his words were uncomplicated, and once again it was something he really ought not to have - such honesty was just too open, too naive. But he meant it, and he held Claudia's hand a little tighter before he let it go. "You shouldn't be sorry," he said sincerely, " 'S just how things get sometimes like that, 'n then if you're unhappy you shouldn't be sorry to nobody for it 'n not me or Risha for sure."

Marisha spoke up now, "I am Marisha Nathar, my Lady, and this is my brother, Nerid." She felt in her reticule for a handkerchief, then a puff of powder, a mirror, and a handful of other cosmetics. Claudia's makeup had run and smeared, and it would be difficult to return it to looking exactly as it had, but it could certainly be improved from how it looked just now. "Here, if you don't have something with you - and - " Water, they needed to clean off her face, and a cool compress would take the puffiness from her eyes in a couple of minutes. With her free hand she slid the lid off of the rainwater hogshead that stood nearby to catch the flow of water down a gutterspout, and dipped the handkerchief in.

She was careful not to disturb the water too much; she did not want to cause the layer of ash that had settled to the bottom to come swirling up. "A compress, my Lady. It works wonders."

"Thank you," she whispered, shocked. "Both of you. I..." She accepted the compress touching it lightly to her eyes. "I must look such a fool to you, my lord, my lady. I assure you I do not do this sort of thing commonly; its only that today has been so very...difficult. My family is; well I'm sure you know that tonight is the Casuana event and every family is engaged in their preparations...." She took a breath trying to find a calm she did not feel. After a moment she started to lightly dab at the make-up that had ran down her cheeks and smeared under her eyes. She couldn't fix it but she could make herself presentable at least.

"Forgive me," she repeated, sounding more steady. "I suppose I have not made the best impression - especially to people of such kindness. I must admit I do not know your family name. You are not from Luthadel I take it?" She touched Nerid's arm lightly in gratitude, noticing the openness with which he regarded her. It was...unusual to say the least, but refreshing even if she suspected his mind was fairly simple.
