The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

"It's not hard to figure out, Nevan. You're the most eligible bachelor in the Final Empire right now, by virtue of your station alone. Of course every noblewoman in the capital would kill for a chance to capture your interest."

"And you?" he asked quietly, though part of him didn't want to hear the answer.

"Already have," she answered with a shrug. "Twice, actually. The third got away, unfortunately."

"....."

"I was kidding again, Nevan." He sighed with relief - "They never get away."

Lucille, Aaron was happy to note, was really a talented dancer. She responded to his leads without hesitation, and never tried to lead like some women did. As he spun her around Aaron hoped she wasn't bored with him. "I shall take note of that my Lady, and resolve never to speak of those troublesome bread products for the remainder of our conversation."

Quote

"First of all, Aldwin, what are you doing quoting the parts I don't remember? - you'll make me look foolish, coz! And where have you been, and how have you mussed yourself like this?" She picked at his hair, since he was conveniently kneeling at a level where she could reach easily, and tried to smooth it back where it belonged, then took the lapels of his jacket and gave them a lift-and-flip that settled the jacket back into a respectable, less rumpled look. "You dropped my packages, too, and probably broke something. And you're trying to steal my role as the heroic rescuer on top of that! I have already seen to getting her fixed up, you rogue, so cease and desist already; you're too late for the laurels."

Quote

"We're going to steal House Hasting's treasury?" Mia asked. "Why, Lord Nevan! That would be quite improper of nobility of our stature." She paused, enjoying his confident dancing. "Though I'm afraid that mental image is too hilarious for me to shoo away now."

Quote

"Let me put it this way. If, on some insane madness the Inquisition came to assassinate Damien, when every single Inquisitor comes into his office, not only will his hair and face stay utterly pristine, but he would probably be able to convince the Inquisitors it's silly to attack him. He'll just talk them out of it. He wouldn't stress at all--he's impossible to anger.

"Before you know it, the Inquisitors will have to witness a contract they just made with Damien, where he is now the sole provider of whatever strange stuff from Farmost he puts in his hair to the Steel Ministry. Of course, the feat there isn't that he got the Inquisitors to forget that they are all bald, it's that he got the Inquisitors to actually witness something and not be killed in the process."
-Mia Casuana, Getting Back On Track

"I..." started Aaron. What do I say to that? He noticed his comment had brought both women's attention on him. A pity, for a moment he had hoped the two would go on pretending he wasn't there. Think of something to say you fool! "I..." Well that certainly wasn't anything. "I..." Out the distant sky, something caught his eye, despite the light ash fall. It was the pinacle of Kredik Shaw. "...Sometimes wonder if the Lord Ruler is something of a mathmetician," he finished. What? "After all," he continued. I might as well go with it. "There are ten great houses, ten dominances, if you count to Southern Islands, and ten allomantic metals, of course. Three tens multiplied together.." He silently blessed his math tutor for teaching him the trick of counting zeroes, "Makes a thousand, yes? And as we all know, Kredik Shaw is the Hill of a Thousand Spires." He crossed his arms thoughtfully, feeling absolutely ridiculous. Nevertheless, he flashed them his most charming smile. Might as well try to make them laugh."Seems to me, he must be quite the numbers man, to design a universe with such... symmetry."

Sanna rather liked Aaron on the whole, but she was still rather uncertain what to think about everything that had happened earlier; her decision was crystallized as she heard the cool tone in Luci’s voice. Well, that settled it; she was taking Luci’s side.

"Yes, sometimes bread really does hit the spot. Luckily, Jinzan here had some on hand. A woman's cravings can get out of hand at certain times, and even I don't know what I will crave when the times comes. It is good to have a Terrisman who comes prepared." There, perhaps that would make him leave. She hadn't said anything overt of course, but most men when confronted with anything that even resembled a woman's 'time of the month' ran in the other direction. Just for good measure, she continued, slipping a piece of bread seductively into her mouth as she did so. "Tell me Lord Damien, what is it you crave?"

First of all, that WHOLE POST from Nevan, last, was so freaking awesome. That was epic.

Secondly,

"Oh..." Viridian replied, taking in a deep breath and releasing it slowly, "of course.... I mean... I had forgotten that... but never mind that." the forlorn expression steadily lifted into a more relaxed and relieved neutrality. Her composure returned she set to work alleviating Nerid's own fears, "That is perfectly understandable. I happen to have an extensive..... that is to say that, I am well versed in.... I... I know many words." she wrinkled her nose in thought, then nodded to herself, and she spoke almost as if she were desperately trying to recall a written line, "Yes, I know many words because I have read and memorized the dictionary."

When he faced the two Casuanas his smile had completely vanished. His face was one of stony calm. He turned slowly, and deliberately, emphasizing the silence that had fallen about those in their immediate vicinity. When he spoke, his tone was as cold as his eyes. He spoke softly, to contrast Alistair's bellow. That would put him in a position of power, as others would be more likely to quiet themselves and listen, if they had to strain to hear his words. "I have apologized to Lady Eliza for ending our dance prematurely in such a fashion. When we are done, I suggest you do so as well. You may step aside Lord Riordan. If Lord Alistair wishes to challenge me, let him. His childish behavior suggests a tendency for unruliness. If he has trouble with manners, I would be happy to teach him to behave like the man he ought to be."

Caden Hasting in the Casuana Ball, Part II. Not something that made me laugh, but this was really good. Caden just got badass. :D

"Whoa, whoa, whoa," came Jalen's voice, cutting off any further reply. "Back up for a minute. Did she just call us ex-convicts?"

"That was all a big misunderstanding," Winchester explained, glaring at Jalen.

"You see, legally, we weren't actually convicted of anything." Leave it to Daeric to respond like that. "So I believe proper term would be ex-prisoners. You see, we got into a bit of a... misunderstanding at the front gate. That Lord Bane fellow, whoever he is, didn't appreciate it so much."

"Though if it's the dangerous man, you like, my Lady," Jalen said in velvet tones, reaching to kiss Sanna's hand, "I'll be happy to play the part."

"Oh, knock it off, you," Lucille said while Daeric and Frederin hauled Jalen back by the back of his coat collar. "Honestly! And you don't even know her name yet! Is there anyone you won't flirt with?"

"I don't flirt with you," was Jalen's innocent reply.

"Yes, after I dumped you in the canal the first time you tried."

"Well, I suppose that's true. That was cold, by the way. Did you have to do that in the dead of winter?"

"Did you have to flirt with me right next to a canal in the dead of winter?"

".... Touche."

However, when Riordan came out with his comments to the girl with Caden, it put her right back in mind of her anger at him from earlier, and she glared at the oaf, though she was at quite a distance and he wouldn?t have any notion she was doing it. It was the principle of the thing.

Careful, she reminded herself. Careful. Don't let him provoke you. This needed to be delivered properly, after all. She slowly closed the distance between them, grinning, her eyes gleaming. "Actually," she said, "I wanted to give you something now." Slowly, carefully, she began pulling her glove off as she spoke. "Right. Here. Where everyone can see."

She smiled again, as sweetly as ever, then clenched her fist and brought it up in a flash, aiming to punch him square in the jaw.

...Jansten's request gave Vizar pause.

He looked at Jansten, his face neutral. "You wish me to do what?" Vizar was unsure if this was a joke, or if he was really meant to go over to Eliza Fathvell and tell her she had a great right hook. He hoped it was the former.

-Vizar, in the Casuana Ball, Part II

Quote

Vizar stood from the table. This could have possibly been the worst thing that Jansten had ever told him to do. He would obviously not use those precise words in telling the young lady she hit Riordan Casuana quite well, unless he was specifically told to do so. He couldn't use the word "wallop" without it sounding incredibly absurd coming from his mouth. He was far too proper to use the word. He took a deep breath and put a smile of false complacency on his face.

The Terrisman turned to leave the table, when he heard Jansten over his shoulder, "Those precise words, Master Landell," he said with a bow of his head. He turned back to his target, Eliza Fathvell. Would he really need to tell her she "packed a good wallop?" Vizar's mind turned over and over this situation. He couldn't think of a way to tell the woman what Jansten said without using his precise words.

He approached the young woman cautiously. He was unsure of himself for the first time since he had started to work for the Landells. He made his presence known and waited for Eliza's attention. "Miss Fathvell, I'm sorry to interrupt, but I have been sent by Jansten Landell. He sends his regards... and asked me to tell you that you pack a mean wallop, and he compliments your timing in the matter as well," Vizar closed his mouth, those words feeling so strange on the tip of his tongue. He would never use the word wallop in a sentence again. It sounded much too strange coming from his Terris lips.

They neared Keep Elariel, and Riordan raised the trumpet to his lips. He imagined a grandiose, truly magnificent score to play, one that would shake the foundations of Elariel itself. He'd remembered that confidence made his music far superior. And so, he blew into the horn. It came out more like a fart. That didn't faze Riordan, continuing his parade to fart forth to the Keep.
