The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

Felicity walked in the rain, and, ash and mists. Her latest meeting had gone well, and she had gained some very valuable information. As she passed by Kredik Shaw, she paused. The Lord Ruler would want to hear about this, wouldn't he? Perhaps she could deliver it to him herself. Oh, how she wanted to see him again, even if just for a moment.

Foolish old woman, she thought. What could he want with you, wrinkled as you are? Send a messenger like usual, and be done with it. Childish dreams are for the young.

Despite the sternness of her thoughts, Felicity found a song beginning, and sang it out, gazing up at the Lord Ruler's tower as she did so. Though her voice was old, it was strong.

"What would I give
To live where you are?
What would I pay
To stay there beside you?
What would I do to see you
Smiling at me?"

Felicity thought about her last encounter with the Lord Ruler. Would she ever see him smile. Knowing she was foolish as she did so, she held out her hand as she had years ago, back when she had attended balls, and imagined the Lord Ruler taking it. You old fool!

"Where would we walk?
Where would we run?
If we could stay all day in the sun?
Just you and me
And I could be
Part of your world."

She saw the light of a passing patrol. Feeling instantly embarrassed, Felicity quickly ceased her little game, and hid in the shadows of an alley.

"I don't know when
I don't know how
And I know nothing's starting right now
Wish I could be,
But I'll never be
Part of your world"
