Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

Colette knows best, you know that. Celestine felt a surge of embarrassment as she realized her suggestion had been pushed aside, but reaching the understanding that Colette had noticed something she had missed, it faded considerably. So maybe letting Eliza get close to Caden will play to out advantage after all!

"I never would have thought of that, Colette! I know as well as any how much you worry about him, and what better way to make sure he's not overworking himself than simply letting the two enjoy each other's company?"

Celestine almost left it at that, what with the flaming keep, the skaa mistborn, and all the other drama, but of course, Colette never takes a moment off, nor does Caden. As a matter of fact, neither does cousin Mathieu. I musn't either. And what better way to help Colette than by just making myself useful?

"Is there anything I should do?"

Colette smiled. Dear sweet Celestine, always loyal and willing to help.

"You just stay close, dear," Colette assured her. "Oh, and do keep thinking of ways we could show our dear friend Eliza how much we appreciate her... help... his evening. I quite look forward to hearing your ideas over tea tomorrow."

"Of course you can do it," Eliza reminded her, trying to keep the other woman's mind off the fire. "You'd have passed out if you couldn't, now wouldn't you?"

She felt incredibly awkward at the moment, pulled as she was between Caden and Marceline. But she didn't dare let go of one of them for fear she would fall behind and get lost in the panic, and she didn't want to let go of the other. At least this way there was no way the three of them could become separated like this.

"We are going to get out, and we are going to be fine. You just keep reminding yourself that. Lord Caden will see us safely out."

Focus. She could stay focused. She could. Lord Caden would get them out. Lord Caden was still shirtless.

Lord Caden was still shirtless.

All Marceline's focus flew away and she would have blushed, had she been less freaked out. Why did he still have to be shirtless? Marceline had been keeping her cool so well, but if she couldn't even think about the person getting her out of the keep without her mind getting into such a state that she would never be able to focus. "Just...talk to me? Not about the fire, or Lady Colette, or...or Lord Caden. Just...talk. Please?"

"Oh, and do keep thinking of ways we could show our dear friend Eliza how much we appreciate her... help... his evening. I quite look forward to hearing your ideas over tea tomorrow." Ferrah stiffened slightly, though she knew Colette was only trying to encourage Celestine, the attention she payed to the other girl still made Ferrah slightly jealous. Your position is secure, she reminded herself. Colette knows you will have ideas of how to deal with this, and that she doesn't need to ask you to come up with them, that's all.

Colette's idea was clever, of course, but Ferrah was still worried that Eliza might muck things up somehow, if not for Colette, then possibly for her. Her eyes slid to Marceline, clinging to Eliza's arm, still on the verge of panic no doubt. Using the Fathvell girls attachment to Caden to their advantage would be one thing, but Ferrah could not allow her to split up Colette's carefully crafted group of friends.

"Brilliant as always," Ferrah chimed in softly, with a sly smile she hoped would hide her insecurity. "And who knows, if we let this go a little further before making a more drastic move, we could catch Caden as well as Lady Eliza in a scandal. Once she's served her purpose, of course."

"Quite right, Ferrah dear," Colette purred, then lowered her voice slightly. Marceline and Eliza were nattering on about something just ahead, so she doubted Caden would be able to hear her, but it was best to remain cautious all the same.

"I mean, look at her. Clinging onto a shirtless man's arm like that. And in plain view of all of society, too! Can you believe it? One can only imagine what she might be willing to do in a more... intimate setting."

"Talk? Of course. I can do that."

Could she?

Eliza didn't have a lot to talk about, really, at least not to Marceline. With Nadia, they mostly talked about how awful Colette's flock of magpies were, but she couldn't exactly pursue that particular topic in present company. Pirates were probably off limits too; Marceline was already frantic enough without exciting her any more. Which left one thing: wine. She didn't know if Marceline cared at all about wine, but she was about to learn.

"Did you know that most Fathvells are thoroughly educated as connoisseurs of wine from a young age?" she asked. "We could tell you how it's made, which grapes make which wine, and when those grapes are in season. Or at least, a properly educated one can. Ask any self-respecting Fathvell what to serve with a meal, and they'll hand you the perfect bottle of wine.

"For example: when serving poultry, white wines such as pinot or chardonnay are often served. Pinot grigio is excellent with fish; it's a classing pairing in Isles cuisine. Pair Cabernet Sauvignon with mushroom dishes or red meats, but if you're looking for something a little stronger with your steak, you can't go wrong with Shiraz. For dessert, try some Merlot with chocolate, or fruit paired with a sweeter moscato or even champagne. Now, if you prefer something like..."

And so she continued on, rambling about every possible wine pairing she could think of until someone interrupted her. She could only hope it would hold Marceline's attention enough to keep her calm and focused.

Caden was only half listening to Eliza and Marceline's conversation, but he heard enough to realize how well Eliza was dealing with the pressure, and with the hysterical Dumont girl. It would seem he had found himself a stable ally, if he decided Eliza could be trusted when all of this was through, after all.

Finally, a gap opened up without Caden having to create one, and the group spilled out of the Casuana atrium into the courtyard. People were still running every which way, and chaos reigned. There was a carriage on its side nearby, and Caden could see others being defended by coachmen and house guards from nobles looking for a quick ride home. Any other day such defiance to a superior could have been a death setenece, especially if the servant in question was a skaa, but surely the punishment faced when the true owner of a carriage was left behind would be far worse. Tonight, Caden wouldn't be surprised if the owners of those carriages awarded such loyalty, no doubt hoping a rival was left behind and injured or killed in the chaos.

Spotting Hasting colours, Caden led his group through the chaos, watching for danger. It would seem that the Casuana soldiers had managed to push back the rebels from this area, but Caden wouldn't put it passed the street smart thugs to be hiding in wait for vulnerable nobles. The air, though cooler and fresher than in the keep, still seemed thick with smoke, and the courtyard seemed to be lit by more than just the usual torches and limestone, though Caden could not see where the flames were coming from.

Reaching the carriage, Caden waived aside a guard, and watched as a Hasting captain politely but firmly told a struggling noblewoman that she would have to find a different carriage. As Caden gestured to the women to board, he waived the captain aside, and offered the woman his seat, explaining to the captain that he could ride up top with the driver.

It wasn't until the woman had clamed a bit that Caden realized her eyes were not just wide with fear, and not until the Hasting captain offered him his jacket that he realized he still had yet to put on a shirt.

Lord Ruler! Finally!

The group, the chaotic little mess that they were, spilled out into the open air and Eliza took a deep breath of sweet, sweet freedom. "See?" she said to Marceline with a smile. "We made it. Good job." Now she just needed to find Jerzen, and... or they could go to the Hasting carriage. Were they seriously going to all cram in there?

As the group gathered around the carriage, Eliza was forced to let her arm slip free of Caden's in order for him to get the carriage and the guards in order. She tried to ignore the slight pang she felt as they parted, but that was soon forgotten when a soldier handed him a coat.

Oh.

Right.

Caden wasn't wearing a shirt.

And she'd spent the entire evacuation clinging to his arm.

Bloody ashes.

When she stepped into the fresh air, Marceline relaxed her hold on Eliza's arm. Only slightly, of course. She was still on edge. However, now that they were out of the burning Keep she was not as afraid. "Thank you, Lady Eliza." She said softly, breathing more easily. And then Lord Caden led them to a Hasting carriage and her mind froze. Did he really expect them to be able to all squeeze into that one carriage?

However, finally, finally, Lord Caden was not going to be completely shirtless anymore, and once he was not, it would make Marceline feel at least a little more relaxed. Now she just needed to make sure that she wasn't going to be rejected by the group purely for wanting to get out of the Keep, and then she would feel awesome.

She felt Eliza stiffen and glanced at her. Was something wrong? Marceline hoped that nothing would be wrong for at least the rest of the month. She just wanted everything to be normal and nice and non-life-threatening.

There was quite an awful raucous throughout the keep that kept Teresia from her business that evening. Since arriving she'd spent some time with Colette and the others before disappearing into the nethers of the keep proper.

Cracking a door slightly, covered with nothing but the bed sheet she clung to her breasts, she peered out into the corridor. Instantly, the chimes of fighting became more audible. Was someone having a duel? Inside the keep? Well, at least if she was caught she wouldn't be the highlight of the night any longer, but still, just to be safe, she could use the distraction to slip out and back to the party without notice.

Maybe she'd pretend to have seen Caden somewhere just to see the look on Colette's face. Though no doubt he would already be the fixation of many eyes that anyone could see that Teresia Martel was not with him. She'd think up an excuse on her walk back, as she now began flinging on her undergarments, slapping away from her bum the questing hand belonging to her conquest for the night. Fully dressed, she parted with a sultry smile and a suggestive wink, though she wasn't expecting to return to his chambers any time soon. He was lacking in finesse.

She was on the second floor and it took her a short time to reach the main ballroom. Striding out onto the landing and heading for the stairs intent on joining the crowd around the duel, she paused. Something wasn't right. There were sounds of people fleeing and, sure enough, when she looked down the scene was pandemonium. People bee-lining for the exits and a man she was unfamiliar with facing down an Inquisitor. Who in their right mind would think facing one of those abominations was a great idea? She found herself mentally applauding the guy as much as she wanted to scream what an idiot he was, but then, he seemed to be holding out okay. Mistborn, perhaps?

Studying the scene she noticed the sight of Eliza with a small group, clinging to the arms of Caden. Lucky her. Even luckier for her that Caden wasn't wearing a shirt. She laughed at that, unable to find herself shocked after she'd had less on herself not too long ago. Though she supposed the bed room was a more appropriate place for that.

Shaking herself, this was no time for reverie, she needed to get out, so she proceeded down the flight of stairs, almost squealing in shock as a guard ran past her. She was lucky there were no more complications, making it to the main doors of the keep and out into the cool, open air. Panning around the crowd it took her a moment to locate Colette's ridiculous hair.

No matter how Colette tried to spin it, tonight was a complete and utter disaster. Eliza Fathvell had gone completely rogue, Caden of all people had taken the lead, and now Marceline had defected as well! Worse still, she had been forced to play her assigned part in this madness, if only for her own safety. Well, that was done now, so she could stop helping perfect strangers and focus on regaining what control she had left. There were going to have to be some serious consequences for this. She could start by giving the Fathvell girl a healthy dose of embarrassment and shame. It wasn't a suitable punishment in and of itself, but it helped Colette feel better, so that was nice at least.

It was only when Caden finally had the decency to put on a bloody coat did Colette spot a familiar face returning to the group. Teresia Martel, showing her face at last. Useless.

"And where the Deepness have you been?" Colette snapped. "You're lucky you didn't get trampled, or burned alive, or murdered by that skaa creature."

It didn't take long for Colette to notice her approach, and even less time for the reprimands to begin. Teresia inwardly rolled her eyes, though she could feel a twitch in her eyebrow as she suppressed the urge to actually roll her eyes. Quickly rubbing it in the hopes of covering it up, she spoke gaily. "Oh, I was testing the fidelity of some married men around the party. Usual business. I noticed Fathvell making herself an ornament on Caden's arm, are we going to deal with that?" She felt instant sorrow for the young girl; behind Colette's eyes was the formation of a devious plan to humiliate her. There had to be. For someone who was a part of Colette's social group it was a breach of trust with all of them to walk out of a party on Caden's arm like that. Colette would not simply let it slide. No way.
