The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

There is no running away, only duty. That doesn't mean one can't have a little fun with it, though.

Everyone has their secrets. What is yours?

What a delightful question! I'm flattered really, but there really shouldn't be any secrets between friends, and we are friends, aren't we? After all, I don't think I could have such a delightful conversation with anyone who wasn't a friend. Now, I know it's not polite to gossip, but when chatting with two or ten of your closest friends, surely they can be trusted with a secret or seven.

As for myself, I have nothing to hide, honestly. Except of course for my trifling infatuation with both Lords Aldwin Tekiel and Efram Lekal. I don't know if I shall ever be able to decide who was the better dancer. And they are both so charming and intelligent too. Lovely company. But that, of course, can hardly be counted as a secret, can it? And even if it were, I suppose now that I've told you it's not a secret at all. But this must stay between us of course. I can't let either of the scoundrels know how highly I regard them, lest it go to their heads.

But you see, I really have nothing hide.
(Except for the fact that, even though I refuse to admit it to myself, I am a skaa and my life is a sham).

Now it's your turn. Have any pretty faces caught your attention recently? If so, you simply must tell me who. I'd die of curiosity if you didn't. And don't worry, of course this will stay completely between you and I. It will be our little secret. :)

Why yes! I have my eye on one of them now; I intend to make sure he asks me to the next ball. Lord Jalen Domaille is very handsome and charming, and very amusing, although between you and me I think he's something of a rapscallion.

Kaled Valoren rescued me from a Situation, which you have to admit is very romantic and dashing of him. So maybe I'll go somewhere with him, too! You can never have too many young men on a string, you know, you just have to be careful that you never encourage any of them too much.

I've made a lot of new friends recently. There are several new young nobles in town, but there are a few in particular from Urteau - Lord Jalen, who I mentioned, and his three friends, (who are all bachelors, by the way, Lady Arnell!), and then there is Luci - I mean, Lucille Deveaux...

I think she's the nicest person I've ever met. I don't know how to describe her. She makes you feel happy, more alive just to be around her. That sounds strange, doesn't it? But that's the way it is...things look more beautiful, music touches you differently, everything you do seems more worthwhile. She just has this...warmth. Like a light inside of her, you know? She's a really, really good friend, even though I haven't known her all that long, I feel like I've known her forever somehow.

Am I making any sense?

What kind of idiotic question is that?

(That's an answer AND a question, nitwit.)

[Impersonating Lord Churchill]

Matters of the heart - or any emotion - do so challenge some people.

But please, I meant no disrespect, how about we drink to my health? [A hearty laugh].

Two problems with that. I don't drink, and your health is irrelevant to me.

Are you always this stupid or are you making a special effort for me today?

But this whiskey is concerned for my health - concerned that I should drink it soon, bahahahaa!

Maybe you should start drinking? You may find an answer to that young man's question.

I was going to say that you didn't answer my question, but in fact, you did. You're clearly always that stupid.

Why do I bother?

Wisdom is in the ear of the... eye? No, humm, how many of these have I had?

Anyway, wisdom is in the man who can... drink the most. Isn't that a reasonable philosophy?

Sir, you've gotten 'whiskey' and 'wisdom' confused, I know they start with the same syllable but they aren't quite the same thing.

I think you probably have had enough, why don't you give me that bottle and sit down for a little while?

My lady, I must concede that the wisdom is infact with yourself. You wouldn't like the whiskey though, they seldom go well together.

Besides, the gentlemen here understand wisdom in a lady more than whiskey because some of them don't drink.

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to tell me but I think you're telling me that I'm wise. How can you say such a thing? I absolutely plead innocent to that charge.

(Also, the gentleman you're thinking of can't understand wisdom in a lady at all, I know he can't. He's a mean jerk.)

Also, you forgot to ask a question! I'm going to have to hit you with my fan for breaking the rules.

So anyways, how could you say such a dreadful thing to me?

Please, my lady, you reveal too much of your penchants with such forwardness.

I must insist I keep drinking so my wit is not the victim of my blunders. My dreadful nature is a measure of vintage, marked by the taste.

(And before philosophy becomes my soliloquy how many times do you think we can get that guys' eyes to roll in his head?)

As many times as you allow him to disrespect you. One must be accountable for how people react to them. Behave with decorum and people will treat you with it.

Why should birth hold as much importance as ability in determining rank and standing?

It shouldn't, but it usually does. It may have something to do with presumed talents earned through birth, beliefs about people's birth influencing their personalities, or just simple tradition-induced idiocy on part of the otherwise usually competent people giving out the judgement.

Why have so many noblemen treated me like an equal or near equal lately?

Because your behavior gives you away. You don't act like a skaa, so people don't treat you like one. Since most people think they are only nobles or skaa in the world, they assume that is what you must be, even if you're behavior reveals that to be a lie as well.

How far would you go to get your heart's desire?

I don't know. I never really had the freedom to view going past the rules as a possibility until my master died, and then I was too busy surviving to really think that through.

Why do you want power?

To protect myself and my brother. Anyone who has ever been powerless wants power for the same reason. I live my life in fear, and I don't want to do that anymore. I will do whatever it takes.

What do you want more than anything else in the world?

You know I... I don't really know. I don't think I'm even sure what I want, regardless of whether I want it more than any of the other things I don't know that I want. I suppose I just want to be happy, and for people to get along. That would be nice.

What are you doing with your life?
