The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

The mists danced and spun in the night as the carriage sped toward Keep Tekiel. Luci could catch the muted glow of keeps in the night, and if she burned tin, she would be able to distinguish the towers as well. But there was something about tonight - something that gave the night a bit of a spooky edge. It would be a shame to spoil it, so tonight she would admire the mists and the flavor they lent the night.

At last the carriage came to a stop, and the carriage door opened. Lucille stepped down with the help of her footman - or would have, had her breath not caught and her foot not missed the step, causing her to topple forward and almost into the arms of the poor startled footman.

Keep Tekiel was lit with purple limelights.

Lucille fixed her dress - midnight blue covered in silver sparkles, an artist's rendition of the starry night sky - thanked the footman for catching her, and hurried inside. She had just stepped into the foyer when she was caught by the hands and spun around by a pale blue monstrosity with a familiar grin.

"Luci! Luci, you look beautiful!"

"Aldwin? Lord Ruler, what are you wearing?"

"Do you like it?" he asked proudly, shrugging to adjust his expertly tailored - and obligatorily rumpled - pale.. blue... suit. With blotches of other fabrics, seemingly sewn on at random, stitched on all over it. It almost looked like... "It's my Mistwraith suit! Get it?"

"How could I not?" Luci asked with a laugh. "You look, um, very... Mistwraith-ey?"

"Excellent! Exactly what I was hoping for. And you! You look just like... like.... the lake?"

The lake.

"The lake. You think I'm the lake?"

"Well... what are you then?"

Luci sighed. Maybe she should have come as something more people than just Tineyes and Mistborn could recognize.

It had taken Sanna a little longer to do her makeup and hair, and so she'd told Aldwin to just go on down without her, she'd be along a little late. She wasn't far behind him, but there was no sense in holding him up while she put herself together. He needed to welcome people, especially Luci; she'd asked him particularly to pull her aside. She was not going to lose Luci for the whole of this ball at least.

The dark green suit was tailored to fit her body, hugging the carefully-shaped curves of her figure, and emphasize the fact that while it was a man's clothing it certainly was not a man wearing it. Her face was touched with less dramatic makeup than sometimes, but still just a few traces for the right effect. Her long hair was tucked up underneath a jaunty little cap.

All in all, she thought she looked quite pretty as a girl in boy's clothing. Instead of being the laziest costume in the history of the Final Empire, it was really difficult to achieve. Sanna was rather proud of it as she came tripping down the main Tekiel staircase to join the scattered people who were gradually turning into a throng. She searched the faces for the right one -

"Luci!" she said delightedly, darting over to join her cousin and her friend. "You're lovely!"

"Sanna!" Luci exclaimed with delight, leaving Aldwin behind to rush over to her friend. It was Sanna, right...? She took a closer look, and yes, that was most definitely Sanna. It was slightly disappointing; when she'd first caught sight of that suit, she had been hoping that Kardin had decided to make another appearance. Luci supposed it shouldn't technically matter, since they were two aspects of the same person.

But still, she couldn't kiss Sanna in public like she had Kardin a few months ago.

"Sanna, look at you!" she said with a smile, reaching for her friend's hands. "You look wonderful. Now, it's obvious what you came as, but can you tell what I am?" she asked, giving a demonstrative spin.

If Sanna said the lake, she was going to scream.

"Um..." Sanna racked her brains for some idea of what Luci was trying to be. "...the lake? No! Wait! The canals of Urteau - with the lights reflected in the water!" she amended, triumphantly.

Luci sighed. Out of the corner of her eye she could see Camille float by, the diaphanous silvery fabric of her elaborate gown wafting gently on an unseen breeze. Solid underneath, and draped in more layers of that sheer silk than Lucille could count, the gown almost seemed to move with every breath Camille took. Lucille was sure there was no way anyone could mistake what she was supposed to be.

"Close enough, I guess," she said in disappointed tones. "I suppose the stars could reflect in the water, if the mists didn't get in the way."

For once, possibly in a lifetime, Gervais was attending a ball. He refused to admit to himself the reason for it, though he could not drive the damnable creature out of his head. Somewhere in his mind she was laughing at him, that silver peal of hers joining his own bitter self-mockery. He was an utter fool.

A mask fashioned in the shape of a grinning human skull obscured his features, and he wore unrelieved black, a dueling-cane at his side. He strode towards the little group. It was important to pay his respects, after all. "If it isn't one of my innumerable nephews. How my siblings do seem to breed. What a wonderful evening."

His eyes did not shift towards the girl in the spangled blue dress, but he saw her clearly regardless.
