The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

"Yes, sleep sounds like a wonderful idea," Mia said aloud, despite her loneliness. She glanced to the bed. It was empty. Julian would not be coming back for a good long time unless the skaa rebellion ended. Mia couldn't help but feel an anger to the skaa for taking him away. She would not forgive them any time soon.

She sighed. Night was the worst of times. People could curse mistwraiths all they wanted; the real danger was here, being alone in bed, where Mia's thoughts could roam freely. Roam wherever they pleased... to a dark place. Mia lay down--there was no need to change into more appropriate clothes, since she would undoubtedly wake up multiple times. There, she wondered how dark the night would be if mist had not obscured it. Without a red sun, there would be nothing. Pitch blackness.

Somehow, she thought her mind would be darker than pitch blackness. And so, she struggled for two hours before finally falling asleep.
