?If we had wanted you to only bring half the shipment,? she told the man angrily. ?We would have paid you for half the shipment! Now, where is the rest of it? This much wool won?t keep us in production very long, that?s why we ordered the amount we did.? Jessica?s brown eyes seemed to catch the shipmaster in a vice like grip. The ashfall was heavy today and it was hot and muggy. There was a slight breeze blowing off the canal but it was warm and did nothing to alleviate her discomfort. Her dress stuck clung to her skin and despite her efforts the hem was coated in grey streaks. The weather was doing nothing to improve her mood. Her father had ordered eight barges of wool to be sold to the local textile mills. Only half of the order had arrived.

?I ? I am sorry, Lady Marsdale?? the man stammered under the weight of her gaze. ?It was unavoidable. The shipmen on the other barges took sick and had to put ashore for a time?.I assure you??

?I don?t care who took sick,? she growled. ?We do not pay you for excuses, we pay you to deliver our goods when and where they are ordered. This delay is going to cost boxings, a great many boxings. How would you suggest we explain our short supply to our clients??

?My lady, I can assure you that it will only be a day more, perhaps two and then you?re wool will be here?there is no need for alarm. You will be able to fill your orders?.?

She sighed. Shouting at this man might make her feel better but it wasn?t going to make the wool she needed materialize out of thin air. Her expression turned from anger to stony acceptance. ?Very well,? she said acidly. ?But be assured, the delay will be taken out of your pay and if you make us wait too long it will come out of your hide!? She turned on her heel without waiting for a reply. A skaa was tending to her horse nearby, keeping it calm and her escort ? two armsmen from her father?s private security, waited as well. She took the reins from the skaa and mounted, pulling herself up into the lady?s saddle and adjusting the folds of her dress. She ran her hand comfortingly along her horse?s main, whispering soft words of reassurance. Once she was certain her escort was ready she urged the mount into a slow walk. Jessica longed to give the horse free reign, to gallop through the city heedless of the consequences but she couldn?t do that. She had much to do yet in Luthadel today before she returned home.

Dressed in the well-cut suit of minor nobleman, Perrin walked slowly along Canal street, filtering through the many conversations that his tin-enhanced ears picked up. Nothing out of the ordinary was jumping out at him, just the usual mundane topics. He listened briefly to many of the different conversations, hoping maybe something would intrigue him. Nothing; but he didn't give up hope yet.

... be assured, the delay will be taken out of your pay and if you make us wait too long it will come out of your hide!? Perrin's ears perked up a little, hearing such harsh words come from a female voice. He glanced back over his shoulder towards a barge that was docked at the side of the canal. From the looks of it, it carried a load of wool and apparently the young noblewomen now leaving the barge wasn't happy about some sort of delay. Perrin studied the dark haired noblewoman as she mounted her horse and began to ride down the street towards him.

She looked nearly as harsh as her threat had been to the poor Skaa running her barge. From the looks of her outfit, she wasn't of any Great House, which made her a less than desirable target for Perrin, but a target nonetheless. Perrin turned back around and clasped his hands behind his back as he walked. He listened carefully to the sound of the noblewoman's horse as it walked towards him. This lady deserved to be taught a lesson, perhaps not today, but in a short time. For now, Perrin would simply do his best to obtain information from her so that he could plan something, or even bring back the information to the rebellion.

Perrin slowed his pace and made sure that he walked directly in the middle of the narrow rode running parallel to the canal. There would be no room for the lady's horse to pass by him without trampling on him; something she wouldn't do because of the fact that Perrin looked like a noble of her own station.

Jessica reigned her horse in pulling up short abruptly as the man crossed in front of her. Already angry her eyes narrowed into slits but she kept her voice low and level. "Excuse me." As as expert horsewoman all she needed was a little space to maneuver, far less than someone might assume, and she would be able to get through but the street was very narrow and he had managed to place himself in the most obstructive position possible.

Behind her, Jessica's escort pulled up as well. She heard one of them curse as his horse danced back into people moving behind them. She tapped her fingers lightly against the reins, noticing the lacquer on one of the nails had started to chip off. That added another thing she was going to have to do today to her list. Jessica focused an insincere smile on the man, and waited.

Perrin grinned mischievously as he continued his slow pace down Canal Street. He had heard the noblewoman ask for him to move, it was hard for him not to with his tin on. And yet, he didn't move. However, he did turn around to face the lady, his grin now replaced with a more haughty expression.

"May I help you, my lady?" he asked, with just a touch of snappiness in his hard voice. He could play the part of an annoyed noble just as well as she could. However, if he was going to get even a little information out of this woman, he was going to have to play the part of a charming nobleman. So, as he raised his eyes to look at her face, Perrin softened his expression and allowed his mouth to fall open a fraction of an inch. He would have to make her believe that he was was attracted to her or at least interested in her, otherwise she would just ride right on past him.

He bowed low, "Forgive me. I've been so absorbed in my walk, that I didn't notice that I had become a nuisance," he flashed a hint of a friendly smile at her. "It's such a lovely morning, after all."

Lovely morning? Jessica glanced down at her ash-streaked dress. The muggy air had her hair stuck to her neck in wet clumps. Not at all what she would describe as 'lovely'. She tugged a loose strand of hair. Why did everything have to happen at the same time on one day?

"I'm sorry to disturb your walk," she replied, struggling to maintain an element of calm. "On such a..lovely, hot..muggy...morning." She waved her hand, indicating her men behind her. "We're trying to get by. I'm afraid I'm running a bit behind, and I have to get to an appointment. Would you be kind enough to excuse us?"

Behind her several of the skaa on the docks had paused in their work to watch the docks. She shot them a meaningful glare and they hurried back to their assigned tasks. It wasn't enough that her delivery was only half complete, or that the weather was awful, she had to be held up and become a spectacle blocking off the streets.

This lady certainly knew how to keep a cool head; she hadn't even snapped at him yet. Yet. He smiled sympathetically at the lady, "No." A blunt answer yes, but one way or another, Perrin was going to have a conversation with the lady; there was information to be had. "You're men I will excuse, but I believe that it will do you good to come walk for a bit with me before you're appointment," he said as he took a few steps towards the lady on her horse, "The morning truly is lovely, and it deserves to be enjoyed. Something you won't be able to do unless you break with your schedule."

Perrin smiled up at the lady again, "Will you permit me?" he asked offering his hand up to her to assist her with her dismount from her horse, if she chose to do so.

She starred incredulously at him. "I'm afraid I don't go anywhere with people I don't know, especially without my escort," she said, her voice tight but still polite. She glanced up at the sun. The day was inching along. She had to see the tailor within the hour, her hair and make-up were already drooping and she had to be home early this evening to prepare for her meeting the next day with the Hastings.

"Besides," she added, "I'm afraid that whatever good it might do me, this particular day I have no time to spare in my schedule.' She forced herself to smile down at him while keeping her hands firmly on the reins. Jessica ignored his proffered hand and added "I take it you enjoy the heat?"

Perrin grinned at her firm refusal as he lowered his hand. "I do enjoy the heat, actually. Must say that I don't mind the cold either," he stepped a little to the side. "Well, if you won't go anywhere without an escort, will you allow me to walk with you to your destination? Certainly that can't hurt."

"And as for me being someone you don't know, that can be fized," he bowed slightly, "Lord Perrin Venture, at your service," he said adding another characteristic smile. He knew that his name was useful every now and then, and while it was only half true, he wasn't afraid to use it. But he only used it occasionally, for it wouldn't do if the Venture family here in Luthadel caught wind of an 'impostor' using their name. Thus far he'd had no problems with his name though, due to the fact that his mother had had sense enough to name him a common Venture name. So it was easy for him to say that he was just a distant cousin in the family. And it was amazing what a little name-dropping could do to a situation.

Venture! Jessica didn't know of any Ventures by that name, but she wasn't familiar with all of their extended relatives. Suddenly she was very glad she had refrained from snapping at the man. Her smile became more sincere and she slid easily out of the saddle. Jessica handed the reins back to her attendants. She brushed her hair out of her eyes. "It couldn't hurt at all. Oh, I may have been a touch rude, haven't I? Asking your name before giving mine I mean. My apologies. I'm Lady Jessica Marsdale."

She motioned down the street invitingly. "All my days are hectic, today more so than most I'm afraid. But company is never amiss, don't you think?" It was ridiculous of course to think that a Venture would take an interest in someone from a lesser house like Jessica, no matter how removed from the main family they were. Whatever this Lord Perrin's reasons were for wanting to accompany her it would never do for her to anger or alienate him. The Ventures were likely to be annoyed enough with her family if their alliance with the Hastings went as planned.

Smiling she said, "Shall we go, then?"

Marsdale... Not one of the Great Houses, but that didn't mean that they weren't attempting to become one. That was the way of Luthadel: rise in the ranks or be trampled by those doing so. Perrin nodded and smiled at her apology, "No apology is necessary. I haven't been quite as polite as I should either."

Perrin began to walk at a leisurely pace down the street, staying in step with Lady Jessica. He clasped his hands behind his back, "Company certainly is always nice to have. Which is why I decided to offer to walk with you this morning," he smiled softly, "You looked as though you needed a friendly face." He winked once at her, "Just don't go spreading rumors that there's a nice Venture; I'd certainly be punished severely."

"I suppose I could always use a friendly face," she agreed. "I must admit, though, that your description of the weather amuses me. I wouldn't personally call hot and muggy 'lovely'." Her eyes moved discreetly over the streets as they walked, but she kept her main focus on Lord Venture. "So, you like both heat and cold. Do you commonly have extreme weather in Urteau?"

Behind her the men had withdrawn a respectful distance. They were walking the horses far enough away that they could keep her in their sights and defend her if she came under attack while still allowing her conversation to be fairly private.

Perrin laughed, "Extreme cold, perhaps. But it can hardly be called even that at times. No," he said with his ever present smile, "I've just learned to enjoy the weather, no matter how 'uncomfortable' it may be. There's no reason to let it ruin one's day."

He glanced at Lady Jessica from the corner of his eye, doing his best to keep his next sentence casual, "You seemed as though there was a problem back there at the docks. Nothing too serious, I hope. Skaa not being disagreeable, hopefully." Hopefully she would divulge at least a small tidbit of useful information. Nearly anything would do him good to form a small plan of action against her family.

She kept her practiced smile in place. "Oh, it was nothing really." She waved her hand to brush it away. "Just a minor delay, nothing that will cause any harm." She strolled easily with him, trying to find a way out of the hole she had dug for herself. Why do you always have to yell, Jessica? He would never have known to ask if you didn't have to yell.

"What brings you to the canals?" She asked breezily. "Not the average place for a morning walk, Lord Venture. I would think Ahlstrom Square, perhaps."

A delay, huh? Perrin made a mental note to return to the docks to seek out the man that Lady Marsdale had threatened to see if he could squeeze more information out of him regarding this delay in a shipment. Perhaps Perrin would even be able to delay that shipment a few more days, or maybe even indefinitely. "I'm glad to hear that it wasn't anything too serious," he commented.

Perrin turned and looked Lady Jessica square in the face, "I'm not your average lord, Lady Marsdale," he smile now on the mischievous side. He laughed a little, then continued, "I like the bustle that takes place here. Ahlstrom Square is far too boring for me. At least here I have things to watch," he paused and smiled, "And here I have a chance to meet distressed young ladies."

"I see," she said, her cheeks reddening slightly at his description of her. "Well, happy to be of service." The ashfall thickened around her and Jessica paused long enough to wrap her hair with her shawl. "Are you as amiable with the ash as you are with everything else?"

She lowered her speed slightly walking carefully in an attempt to keep the her dress from trailing slightly along the ground.

"It's just another of those things that I refuse to let ruin my day. I look at it this way," he said, slowing his pace to match Lady Marsdale's, "I'm a fairly intelligent being, who likes to have things the way that I want them to be. So, in order to keep myself happy with my situation, it's easier to form my wants to what the world around me is like... at least when it comes to things that I can't control, like the weather or the ash. Everything else that I want, I just make happen for myself one way or another."

They walked in silence for a few moments, then Perrin spoke again, "If you don't mind my asking, what's this big appointment that you are headed to?"

"I'm going to see a wretched tyrant of a perfectionist who is never satisfied until everything is exactly as he thinks it should be," she replied with a mock distraught look on her face. "Unfortunately I'll be completely at his mercy for most of the afternoon. He's my tailor." She motioned for them to turn down another road and added with a smile, "Not really a big appointment I'd say, but one I have to get done."

Perrin grinned, "You're tailor? A fairly important appointment, what with the Casuana ball coming up, eh?" He laughed a little, "My own tailor is quite exquisite. Skaa by the name of Maks," Perrin paused for a moment, "Can be a little temperamental at times, but his work is the best I've seen, and he's still just an apprentice."

She smiled. "So, you see then why I couldn't miss it. Pity, really. Walking by the water would have been so much more pleasant than this. Perhaps we would have even caught a breeze."

Jessica walked slowly for a bit, quiet and thoughtful. After a few minutes she asked, almost casually, "Of course seeing to my dress for the Casuana ball is important. You will of course be in attendance, Lord Venture? Perhaps I could impose on you briefly for a dance."

Perrin sighed as if disappointed, "Ah, unfortunately, I have business elsewhere on the night of the Casuana Ball and will not be in Luthadel. A shame, for a dance with you would have been lovely." And this was at least partially true. Perrin had much better things to do than attend a ball. Though he might make a special exception for the Casuana Ball depending on what the Rebellion would decide to do.

"But perhaps I will be able to see more of you," he said, thinking about how he was going to take some time this next week to scope out whatever mansion or Keep Lady Jessica's family lived in. Certainly he would see her when spying on her family, though she might not necessarily see him.
