The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

Nevan chuckled a little. This Lady Yastrel sure was different from all the other noblewomen. So different that he was sure his mother would be somewhat suspicious. But then, he was acting rather out of place himself, chatting so casually with someone of such a different station. That was the difference between Nevan and other nobles. He preferred to let other people deal with politics.

"Ah, well, you have me there," he agreed with a shrug. "Very well, then. You tell me, Lady Yastrel: who will I be escorting to the Casuana ball?"

Eriaan pursed her lips, in mock thought, and tapped her chin with one finger, "Let me think," she paused, "There are a few ladies that are at the top of my list for guesses."

She folded her arms, "Certainly there is political motivation behind whomever you asked. You're simply too eligible and too powerful to pick a date frivolously," she observed.

"There is Lady Ewing, a very powerful family there, and she's quite lovely. But I don't think that she's your choice for this ball." Eriaan paused, a hint of a smile on her lips, "Lady Deveaux would be a good choice, considering the new contract that your Houses have together. A wise choice especially if you're House is looking to solidify some sort of alliance. And then there's Lady Causana herself. Probably the most powerful and eligible lady in all of Luthadel."

Eriaan paused once more, "Hmmm," she said, pursing her lips again in mock thought, "My guess would be either Lady Deveauz or Lady Casuana, though I think I will have to lean more towards Lady Deveauz."

"Ah!" Nevan replied, holding up a finger, "but don't forget, Casuana just broke contract with Ewing and Venture both, while maintaining all of its trade with Deveaux. Hasting just made a bid for the contract, so some might think Lady Colette might be a better choice." He may be terrible at politics, but he knew how to listen, and even he could pick up on something that obvious.

"What do you think?" he asked mischievously. "Will I try and bridge the gap between Venture and Deveaux-Casuana, or will I attempt to forge new bonds with Hasting, or one of the other Great Houses? Since you're obviously quite well informed."

Eriaan nodded in agreement with all that Venture was saying. She had heard all these things already, and they were, of course, important to the situation. "Well, good business men will tell you that it's cheaper to maintain an old client than it is to establish a new one, so I still think that your House would want you to attend the Ball with probably Deveaux. Especially since it is well known that the Ventures and Hastings are rival Houses."

"Ah! Pinned down at last!" Nevan admitted with a bit of a laugh. "Yes, yes, you got me. I'll be attending in the company of the Lady Camille. If nothing else, at least we'll be able to put on a bit of a show for the other dancers," he added with a wink. He hadn't spoken much with Lady Deveaux, but he had seen her dance at the balls. And if she was anything like his initial impression of her, he suspected they would be dancing quite a bit that night - if only to make conversation a little more difficult.

Eriaan smiled, pleased with herself. "I look forward to watching the pair of you float across the dance floor."

She noticed some ash had landed on her shoulder, and brushed it off lightly, not wanting to grind it into the fabric, "Would it be too bold of me to assume that a future Ball will be reserved for Lady Colette?" she asked casually, hoping that perhaps she'd be able to grab a small bit of information that might be of use later. Perhaps Venture was indeed looking to forge a new relationship with Hasting.

Nevan shrugged. "Perhaps. Perhaps not. Who can say? I suppose it's possible; some Houses are looking to build alliances in light of the rebellion. But I'm sure you already knew that," he added with a wink.

"But what about you?" he asked. "Here you know all about my plans for the ball, but I know nothing of yours. Will you be attending? In the company of a nice young nobleman, perhaps?"

Ah, the Rebellion. Yes, Eriaan was quite aware of it, though not involved. At least directly. Her crew did work against nobles, but it's purposes were more selfish and self-serving.

Eriaan smiled at his inquiry about her plans for the Ball, "Of course I will be attending. It would be a crime to pass up an entertaining evening and some excellent food, for I hear that House Casuana employs an excellent cook or two," she laughed a little, "Unfortunately, though, or perhaps fortunately, I will not be attending with a specific gentleman. My House is not yet important enough for gentlemen to be seeking my company."

"I see, I see," Nevan replied thoughtfully, then broke into a mischievous grin. "Well, it's just their loss, I suppose.

"Regardless, I'm not holding you up, am I? I'd hate for you to miss out on those fantastic pastries because some stuffy, stuck up buffoon of a nobleman kept prattling on at you."

Eriaan giggled, a horribly disgusting thing to do, at Venture's comment. That was what noble ladies did; they giggled. She smiled slightly at the mention of pastries, which had been such a horrible excuse now that she thought back on it. She would have to come up with something better for the next time she was in a situation like this.

"The old lady will wait as long as she needs to for me to arrive; I am on no set schedule. Though certainly, stuffy, stuck up buffoon noblemen probably have a stict schedule they keep to. I think perhaps I will let you get back to it, seeing as I've annoyed you long enough with my presence," she smiled again.

"Ah yes," Nevan replied sagely. "The figment of your imagination that looks like me with whom you have been speaking all by yourself is growing quite irritated.

"I, however, am quite enjoying our little chat." His attempts to keep a straight face dissolved, and he let a bit of a grin slip through. "And I have nowhere particular to be for a while yet. But I suppose," he sighed dramatically, "if I'm bothering you that much..."

Eriaan smiled softly at Venture's profession that he was enjoying their conversation. In truth, she was as well. Albeit, she had probably let her cover slip a bit to much and shown how truly rough around the edges she was, but it was nice to not pretend for once... or at least, not pretend as much.

When Venture stopped speaking, Eriaan looked past him to where her contact was likely waiting. She closed her eyes briefly, flaring tin to see if she could hear anything down the street. Nothing. So, only two seconds after she had closed her eyes, Eriaan dimmed her tin back to a bearable level and opened her eyes. She smiled at Venture, "Of course you bother me. You've delayed me from my original plan for the morning, and it appears that I'm to be delayed further." She laughed a little.

"Tell me, Lord Venture," she said, "Is it wrong of me to leave the Skaa woman waiting?"

"Hmmm. I suppose that's how you look at it," Nevan said thoughtfully, taking off his cloak and draping it casually across the railing of the bridge. True, it exposed his ivory coat to the ash, but that seemed to be lightening up, and the cloak allowed him to lean against the railing, which he gladly did.

"On one hand," Nevan continued, "it's rude to be late, as we've all been taught plenty of times. On the other..." he shrugged. "She's skaa, isn't she? And from what you said, it doesn't seem like she has much else to be doing."

Yes, she was just a skaa in the end. And Eriaan, Lady Alea Yastrel, was no different. She wondered for a moment what Venture's response would be if he discovered that she was not, in fact, noble. Certainly most nobles would be horrified at the revelation. But Eriaan knew of a few that wouldn't be so shocked, perhaps even supportive of what Eriaan and certainly other skaa were doing. But Eriaan didn't know Venture well enough yet to guess which category he would fall into, though she assumed that he would fall with the majority and be disgusted.

She paused for a moment, blocking out all the mundane sensory things that she was picking up nearby, straining to hear if her contact was getting impatient for waiting. Eriaan could make out some shuffling but no one was talking. She would have to leave soon if she wanted to stay on reasonably good terms with the woman.

Eriaan smiled at Venture, "Yes, she is just a skaa. And after all, skaa are only here to serve and wait on us," the comment made in a casual way. "But regardless, I think I shouldn't keep her waiting much longer."

"It certainly has been a pleasure meeting you this morning, Lord Venture. I hope that we'll be able to meet again." She said, clasping her hands behind her back.

"The pleasure is all mine," Nevan insisted, flashing a grin at his recent companion. "I apologize for keeping you from your company, but I'm afraid I just couldn't resist such lovely companionship." That said, he caught Lady Yastrel's hand and brushed it with a gentle kiss. "Until we meet again, my Lady."

He was about to turn back to his surveying the view when a sudden thought occurred to him.

"Don't forget, I would quite like to sample some of those pastries."

"No apology is necessary, Lord Venture," Eriaan said in reply, a smile on her lips. Yes, it appeared that this young lord was prone to flattery. Something that she hadn't quite expected from him. Most of the higher ranked nobles that she had come in contact with acted as though the smelt something disgusting whenever she was around. Nevan Venture was different.

She was about to turn and walk away when Venture gently took her hand and kissed it. Eriaan stood shocked for a moment. A rather bold move on his part. And an extremely flattering move as well. Eriaan recovered quickly though, and curtsied deeply, "I look forward to seeing you again."

And with that, she turned and walked away from the young noble. She was about ten feet away when she heard a voice call out behind her, "Don't forget, I would quite like to sample some of those pastries." A small laugh escaped her lips as she turned back briefly to nod and flash a smile at Lord Venture.

An interesting young man, indeed.
