The Lord Ruler's perfect capital city, Luthadel, is doing the impossible: rebelling. Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. The Lord Ruler's perfect Final Empire is slowly devolving into chaos.

Sanne watched the bodies twitch and fall still, a faint hint of a smile gracing his face for a moment, no longer. It was perhaps the first time he had smiled in weeks, certainly since his departure from Austrex .

Nothing unites people behind preserving the life they have quite like seeing another lose theirs it would seem.

The crowd around the platform spat vitriol and cheers at the skaa remaining, and more so at those already beheaded. Only half the skaa remained, standing in a straight line together on the platform, some crying others resolved, but every one of them staring at the executioner waiting their turn.

I hope now they understand their place in the world; tools to be used and disposed of at the Lord Ruler’s whim. There is no place in their world for ‘freedom’.

Looking away reluctantly he began to move across the square towards the palace district. It had been fitting to arrive in time to see these executions and he would take this as a reminder of why he was here; to help restore order to this city. He had been chosen by the Lord Ruler himself as the new High Prelan of his Canton and he would not fail his God in this honour nor slack in his duties.

First to see what state the Canton has been left in without direction, then perhaps I can ‘discuss’ with them what changes need to be made.

Walking briskly, eyes forward and hands at his side, Sanne cleared a path through people without a word, each moving instinctually to his bearing of authority. Soon he was outside the Canton’s headquarters and he surveyed the building and the people it held, knowing it represented the culmination of his life’s work within the Ministry. His talent had finally been recognised.

Sanne paused for a final thought, and then entered within to begin his new life in Luthadel.

It’s good to be home
