Skaa half-breeds are being taught the power of Allomancy, something that the Lord Ruler's obligators said only existed in the nobility. The enslaved skaa, with their murderous benefactor, now fight back against a living god's oppression.

So, the Inquisition was formed. The nobles begin to fear assassination from all sides. The times of nobility Mistborn killing each other are over. The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. Joreau Profoste
Obligator Seer

Player Information
Name/Handle: J’Tal
OoC Account: J’Tal
Contact Information: [email protected]

Character Information
Name: Joreau
Type: Obligator in the Canton of Intelligence
Age: 48
Gender: Male
Place of Origin: House Profoste located in Fadrax City
Occupation: Prelan of the Canton of Intelligence
Relationship Status: Married

Powers
-Type: Misting
-Metal Used: Atium
-Degree of Skill: Advanced
-Status: Hidden

Appearance: Joreau is of average height and athletic build. From behind, he can easily be mistaken for a soldier or monk. That is, until the tattoos around his eyes are seen. While having no hair, his eyebrows are a jet black. He has piercing blue eyes that seem to tell him everything about whoever he is looking at. When met for the first time, he leaves the impression of ridged authority. His back straight, his cloths pressed, and all possessions in their proper place.

Special Skills: Before joining the Ministry, Joreau enlisted into the Fadrax Military Officer Corps. He trained in hand to hand combat vice the normal dueling cane or sword. Joreau is also known for his communication skills. He is able to start a conversation with a skaa, and walk away with an invitation to the skaa’s hovel for dinner.

Strengths: Joreau is militaristic in nature. He runs his life by strict schedule and order. This enables him to focus on his duties as well as his worship of the Lord Ruler. He also has no problem getting his hands dirty. Literally or figuratively. If there is information that needs to be gained, he will, in person, take the initiative and get it himself.

Weaknesses: Having his life so organized, it is easy for Joreau's schedual to be observed and followed. He also dislikes trusting others to do quality work. He has various aids for paperwork, but when it comes to actual intelligence gathering, he trusts his findings more than any other source. The fact that Joreau is married, and has five children, could be used as a weakness as well.

Personality: Joreau has an obsessive compulsive personality. He feels comfortable with order and schedule, but doesn’t suffer the compulsions that occasionally follow. Joreau also comes off differently, depending on his needs. When he is collecting information, others hang onto his words. People respond as if he were an old friend who is just there to chat. However, if Joreau is taking care of obligator business, he is very brisk. You are there to help him. If you can't accomplish what he needs, then you are useless and are periodically ignored. If however, you cause a problem or interfere with any of his tasks, you will quickly be... taken care of. Joreau feels that the skaa are there for the hard labor, but don’t have to deal with the mental stress of the nobles or obligators. This doesn’t mean that he’ll not put a skaa into its place; this means he feels there is a place for everyone. Including the skaa underfoot.

History: Joreau was born in Fadrax City in the Western Dominance to an wealthy noble family in 870. They weren't one of the great houses, but they were well off. As he grew, he was inspired by the teachings of the Lord Ruler, as well as the doctrine of the orthodoxy. His parents, fearing that he might become a priest, hired several martial artists to teach him the art of combat. These teachers instructed him in the art of hand to hand combat.

At 18, he enlisted into the Fadrax Military Officer Corps. While he was there he trained in the skill of leadership. During the stress of the training he snapped. Of course, at this time he was completely unaware due to the rarity of his metal. Despite the stress and difficulty of the FMOC, he graduated becoming an officer of the Military. Specialized in hand to hand combat over the norm of a dueling cane or sword. Using his innate skills of communication, he became good at finding out minute details that his superiors overlooked.

Being that both of Joreau's parents are powerful allomancers, he was certain that he had allomantic abilities. When the normal metals fail to yield any results, he began searching through all metallurgic records that he could find. As he gained rank in the military, he gained more access, but yielded fruitless results. After an extremely successful operation due to his attention to details, Joreau was invited into the Canton of Intelligence. After accepting, he was immediately put into the field for work. There he worked hard and built a name for himself. It was also at this time that he met his wife, Josephine. She was special in that she felt the same as he did about the Lord Ruler, as well as was supportive of any mission that he had to do on the behalf of the ministry. After a long engagement, the two were married.

During his free time, he would be in the ancient archives trying to find new information. Joreau doggedly searched for any chance that he has allomancy with a desperation of someone who craves validation. While searching, he found an ancient document describing of atium mistings. Acquiring a bead, cost Joreau a large chunk of his savings. Swallowing it, he feels the stored power in his grasp, for the first time. From there, Joreau acquired a ministry funded stipend of atium for training and to use it as an emergency fall back plan, for when his very survival depends on it.

Due to his work in the ministries of obligation, Joreau was unavailable for several of his children’s births. After a time, he began to pick up prestige and gained rank as a competent leader. This landed him a job at the Final Empire’s center; Luthadel. There, he began to build a name for himself. After his third and last daughter was born in 911, he acquired the rank of Prelan. She is the fifth child and Joreau considers this daughter his lucky break due to the timing.

After several years, Joreau became known as a competent leader in the Canton of Intelligence with no remorse for turning in nobles who have broken the Lord Rulers laws. He is responsible for gathering intel on various atium schemes, catching several notable thieving crews, and provided the information needed for apprehending nobles who have stepped out of bounds. The talk on the street is that Joreau is next in line for High Prelan in the canton. The only obstacle is that the current High Prelan is in good health, nor has he been caught with any indiscretions and is in good standing with the Lord Ruler. For the time being...

Roleplay Sample

It was going to be a long day.

Joreau had been cramped inside of a carriage for the last several days. Inside, the carriage was equipped with a desk and filing cabinet for paperwork that needed to be completed by the completion of this trip. Some of the paperwork was about previous trips, but the bulk of it was for the return trip to Luthadel at the completion of this visit. An aid sat in the seat next to the Prelan, whose name was Kelore. The aid had fallen asleep and threatened to drool on the ledger that was open on his lap. Why was he always given the inept aids when new positions needed filling?

Sighing, Joreau lifted the dark curtain that covered the window and looked out into the falling ash. He was on his way to a noble's farm on the far side of Fadrax City. There were rumors that the noble was trying to build a miniature army of allomancers with half-breed skaa. The noble was known to be ambitious, as well as ruthless with competitors. It seemed as if the farm that the Lord Ruler had allocated to him to work wasn't up to the noble's standards. He was planning an assault on one the ruling houses of Fadrax. Most of the information had been gathered by trusted informants that Joreau had handpicked, but before he handed the case over to the Canton of Inquisition, he wanted to verify the data.

In the swirling ash, he could see skaa clearing the road. It seemed like a futile effort due to the storm that was scheduled for the next two days. What was the road maintenance leadership thinking? As he considered this, he noticed that the skaa were not as emancipated as usual, and they were; clean?

“Lord Ruler!” he breathed as the realization hit him. “Kelore! Damn you, wake up! We are about to be attacked.

The only reply that he received was a half-awake groan. Reaching into his robes he removed a small nugget. It had shimmering almost silvery sheen to it. Swallowing the bead, he felt a pool of energy well up inside of him. Joreau then quickly moved to the floor of the carriage.

“Sir?” Kelore asked as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “What are you doing?”

Those were the last words of Joreau’s aid as coins shattered their way through the enclosed death trap that was his carriage. Kelore coughed twice before gurgling on the blood in his lungs. Red blood spread through the aids robes as he collapsed. Fighting could be heard from outside of the now stopped carriage. Waiting until most of the fighting was done, Joreau sighs as he sat up, adjusts his robes and steps outside to confront the attackers.

From an initial glance, there were five assailants left. The obvious leader was giving orders to the remaining attackers, and looked startled to see that he not only survived, but was unharmed. This was going to be tricky, the leader had a bag of clips attached to his belt, he was probably the coinshot that attempted to kill him. The others were unidentifiable at the moment. Looking right, then left, he assessed if there were any of his retinue that had survived the attack. Two were moaning but were bleeding profusely. The rest seemed unconscious or dead. Having surveyed the situation, he smiles as he addresses the half-breed leader.

“You either are very foolish to attack a Prelan Obligator and his convoy, or you are unaware of the target. If you are unaware of the target, this makes you seem all the more foolish.”

The leader bristles at the slight. Before responding, he looks to one of the remaining four. “What is he burning?”

The seeker looks confused for a second before responding: “Nothing, I don’t feel him burning anything.”

The leader laughs and responds that he is the foolish one and such drivel. Joreau isn’t even paying attention as he continues to monitor the situation. Two of the assailants are scarred, muscled, and seem to ignore bleeding wounds. He classifies them as the initial threat as they will likely be sent to attack first. The last individual seems to be wearing chest armor. She is probably a lurcher, he has to watch out as she will be dangerous. There are other attackers on the ground, however they aren’t moving, so he consequently ignores them. Nearby, there is a hazekiller shield, and a plan begins to formulate in his mind.

Maybe today won’t be so boring after all.

Hey J'Tal,

I haven't read your character completely just yet, but I did want to mention a few quick things:

1. This one is easy, just change Canton of Information to Canton of Intelligence :)
2. Though the Ministry does about many of the higher metals, considering the end of Hero of Ages said there were two undiscovered base metals, I would be a lot more comfortable with Joreau not being a Leecher.

I don't really have much a say in these kinds of things, so I'll give my two cents anyays. If the ministry knew about Leechers, not only would it be difficult for them to even acquire the metal, it would also probably have been seen somewhere in the trilogy. Yet it's not. It's good to have a different, but this migh tbe a bit too far.

I understand that chromium is extremely rare. The basis for me selecting this metal is information from the MAG (Mistborn Adventure Game). Under Chromium on pg: 347

Quote

Knowledge of its existance is limited to records dating back to the dawn of the empire, now hidden deep in the archives of the Steel Ministry
Being that both of Joreau's parents are powerful allomancers, he is certain that he has allomantic abilities. When the normal metals fail to yield any results, he began searching through all records that he could find. As he gained rank in the military, he gained more access, but yielded fruitless results. After joining the ministry, during his free time, he would be in the ancient archives trying to find new metals. Joreau doggedly searches for any chance that he has allomancy with a desperation of someone who craves validation. Years go by, until he finds an alloy that is mixed with aluminum. Knowing of aluminum, as the ministry uses it to limit mistborn, Joreau doesn't believe that this alloy will do anything. After having one of the ministries metallurgists create a bar, he shaves a few pieces off and mixing them with a weak alcohol, drinks the mixture. For the first time in his life, he feels the stored power in his grasp. From there, Joreau learned about this strange metal and used it as an emergency fall back plan, for when his very survival depends on it.

Um... I was initially just writing out a validation, but I am going to put this into his history.

The great thing about bureaucracies: they keep excellent records.

First of all, welcome to MBI. I can see that you've put a lot of thought and effort into your character, and that's great. ^^ We love it when people do that.

However, at this time, we have chosen to keep access to the higher metals closed for the time being, except for very specific cases when it comes to the Inquisition (with precedent from the Mistborn canon of course), and even those are very rare. We've had to turn down Nicrobursts and Pulsers in the past, and it wouldn't be fair to them to let it through this time. However, if we decide to change the policy in the future, we'll be sure to post an announcement about it.

We'll also be hosting Mistborn Adventure Game campaigns soon, so you're more than welcome to use ideas like this one at the Narrator's discretion.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but I hope you understand. ^^ I'm happy to see another obligator around, though!

Would it be possible, to have Joreau be a chromium misting, but still unknown? As in: He would essentially be human with no powers, until the policy is changed? Then, his research would pay off and he would discover the type of power he has.

Would that be an option?

That is an interesting MAG quote, but realize the MAG is not completely canonical. We feel that it is there to rationalize people wanting to have Leechers in their campaign, which is fine. It is enabling people to have freedom in their own games.

However, just because any particular campaign might be allowed chromium does not mean that it fits for this campaign. If we allowed that, it significantly changes the nature of MBI because now we are open to the possibility of Inquisitors using chromium and nicrosil, which we have not done. (And really, the Inquisitors are ludicrously overpowered as it is and don't special metals to make it work). We have to remember that while Vin and Elend discovered metals from the storage caches in Hero of Ages (namely, electrum), they did not discover chromium and nicrosil. This means that the knowledge of these two metals were so colossally secret that the Lord Ruler decided to not include it on the tablets that were there to give people hints on how to defeat freaking Ruin.

No, I much prefer the idea that while the Lord Ruler knew of all the metals, he did not give out information to anyone. Which makes sense, if you know that Feruchemical nicrosil stores Investiture, and surely has something to do with the Lord Ruler's advanced Soothing. (The Lord Ruler's Soothing was at the level of Elend burning duralumin and brass, but the Lord Ruler obviously wasn't using duralumin. Brandon has said the Lord Ruler used Feruchemy to enhance his Allomancy. Talk to me on IRC or AIM or something and I'll tell you a way he may have done that; it involves Feruchemical nicrosil.)

So, for the purposes of MBI, chromium and nicrosil do not exist. I am much more comfortable with that all around and it has been our standing assumption for a while.

I suppose Joreau could be a chromium Misting, but our policy is unlikely to ever change, so it would really never influence his character in any way, shape, or form. His research would not have a conclusion.

EDIT: One more logical consequence in MBI to the Ministry knowing about those two metals is that Ignas, a former obligator and now the rebel leader, could have discovered information on the two metals. That is not a bridge I wish to cross. So, I feel that having those two metals would change quite a few things to the nature of MBI, and that's why we are just kiboshing it in general.

I hope you don't feel that we are being difficult or unreasonable, but we do work really hard to try to retain a consistent universe that isn't broken.

I completely understand your point.

If I modified him the be an atium misting, would that fit better into the world?

(I know you not singling me out or anything similar to that. I had a concept that was a little out there, and I tried it out.)

You are perfectly welcome to make Joreau a Seer. In fact, you're in luck, because we currently only accept Seers who are in the Ministry. Works out nicely, huh?

In fact, you will be seeing another one joining the ranks of the posted characters soon. Look out for him! :)

Great! It has now been altered.

I'll look out for the other obligator.

Other than the Chromium, are there any problems with my post?

Hey J'Tal!

Sorry that it's been so long. It looks like your application got lost in the shuffle of fall and winter, and I'm sorry that it did. I'm not sure if you are still around, but if you are, I have a few minor tweaks to point out about Joreau before he is ready for acceptance.

1. I noticed some present tense leaking into the P sample. In MBI, the convention is to use third person limited viewpoints, and we like to keep things uniform for easy reading.
2. The only other concern (that might not be a concern) is with Joreau's duties as a Prelan of Intelligence. Thus far in the RP, we haven't focused much on the field side of the Canton of Intelligence, thus some of the duties might need to be clarified. It might be that what you have for Joreau is fine, and that he'll be ready for acceptance. However, once we talk it over as a staff, you might need to make a few tweaks there as well. It might not be necessary, it's just been so long that I wanted to get a response up for you ASAP. Anyways, for now, this second point isn't all that important, so feel free to ignore it.

Other than that, pending the approval of the other admins, things look good. Apologies again for the extreme wait. :)
