The Steel Inquisitors look for aristocrat traitors and insurgent skaa, and the skaa try with all their strength to merely survive. Delve is a pathological liar. She disguises herself as a young man and lives in the Luthadel underground as a Skaa thief. Her broad build and full figure both help and make it very difficult to convince people she's a man, but she's learned how to make it convincing. She's a pretty young woman with milk-chocolate brown hair and distinctive features, and that results in her being a pretty young man. Life has been hard on Delve and she's pessimistic and cold as a result of that and she hides behind her lies. The lies have become a security blanket for Delve and she often even lies to herself, trying to convince herself that certain things never happened.
