Damien Deveaux - Played By KChan
  • Age: 22
  • Relationship Status: Single
  • Origin: Urteau
  • Allomantic Status: Hidden
Character Overview

Born and raised in the Urteau branch of the family, Damien is a recent arrival to Luthadel, though he's spent time in the city before. Despite his young age, he was recently put in charge of shipping and logistics for House Deveaux, a job he takes very seriously. Though, to be fair, Damien takes pretty much everything seriously - he is the eternal straight man in any given situation, and his calm, composed demeanor makes him almost impossible to ruffle. Of course, that doesn't stop people from trying, though numerous failures on the part of his Urteau colleagues earned him the joking title of Ice King.

At a full 6'5", Damien stands almost a whole foot taller than all but a handful of his Deveaux relatives - a family resemblance to his maternal ancestors, the Urteau branch of House Venture. But it's his second most distinctive feature - his hair - that recently attracted the attention of a Steel Inquisitor for its near inability to stay out of place. It's a long story.

You can read more about Damien in his character app, found here.

Notable Quotes

He seemed all made of rigid angles, each movement controlled and surgically precise. He did not waste a single motion. His hair was somehow kept perfectly in place, his suit without a wrinkle, and when he finally halted in front of her with both hands on his cane, Marisha thought she had never seen anyone so exact about everything in her entire life. His features were striking, but much more so was his demeanor. When he spoke to address her, his voice matched the rest of him, each syllable enunciated so accurately that she could imagine it written rather than spoken, in a sharp, fine-drawn hand.

"Okay, okay," Aldwin agreed hastily, a little taken aback by the sudden change in attitude. "Uhhh. Oh! That cousin of yours. Damien, was it? I don't remember ever seeing him before. Interesting fellow. Ten boxings says he's swarmed by noblewomen at the first ball he goes to.

"I have to ask, though. Is he always that.... posed?"

"Ah yes," Mia said with a smile. Damien was good fun that way. Though talking about the Lord Ruler's executions would probably put Mia more at ease than discussing Nevan. "You'll excuse me if I don't run over to the nearest obligator to take you up on that bet.

"Let me put it this way. If, on some insane madness the Inquisition came to assassinate Damien, when every single Inquisitor comes into his office, not only will his hair and face stay utterly pristine, but he would probably be able to convince the Inquisitors it's silly to attack him. He'll just talk them out of it. He wouldn't stress at all--he's impossible to anger.

"Before you know it, the Inquisitors will have to witness a contract they just made with Damien, where he is now the sole provider of whatever strange stuff from Farmost he puts in his hair to the Steel Ministry. Of course, the feat there isn't that he got the Inquisitors to forget that they are all bald, it's that he got the Inquisitors to actually witness something and not be killed in the process." She laughed. "I mean, can you believe them doing something like that?

"You point Damien to an opponent and give him an hour, that man will be so logical, rational, and downright perfect that the only response is, 'You know, you're right'.

"Lord Ruler, if Damien were in the Canton of Arbitration, I have no doubt that this whole rebellion fiasco would be settled in court in no less than a week."

"You know very well what I mean," Davinna growled, pulling the nobleman's face down to hers. She licked her lips again and smiled softly. "Your. Hair," she stated clearly, biting off every word. "How did you manage such hair? What products do you use? In the Lord Ruler's name, by the order of the Inquisition, you WILL tell me your secrets!"

...

"I think you're lying..." Davinna sang softly, licking her lips again. "The Inquisition has been monitoring all incoming nobles. In the days since you arrived, your hair has never been out of place. It's perfect when you wake up in the morning, dressed in your bright-pink sleeping attire, and during ashfalls not a single pretty little flake ends up in those lovely locks. It is quite fascinating."

...

"I'll be watching you, Deveaux." She said, turning around and putting a slight sway into her hips as she walked away. Her gold finished burning, and the Could-Have-Been faded away into memory. She smiled, eager to start a new one and get access to a whole new imperfect world. "The Inquisition will have the secret to your shampoo..."
